Will it be possible with final release to upgrade from Hardy Heron?? "YES"

    Hello All,

Will it be possible with final release to upgrade from Hardy to Interpid Ibex??
Or do we have to make a clean install??

Yes - you will be able to upgrade with no problem. There will be instructions on the release page.

You can upgrade at any time, even now (if you're not scared by breakage) - you'll just have to re-download a lot of packages over and over as they are tweaked during the beta (released in two days).

I went through the process yesterday and it seems to have gone well, with just a few oddities to straighten out afterwards.

I still have my .kde4 folder, but am I right to assume that it is no longer used for anything?

          Hi all,

I have a quick, related question...

Anyone have an idea of the rate, or ratio, of success when upgrading (K)Ubuntu? As an old Mandrake fan, I haven't gone the "upgrade" route since the late '90's, because they always failed. Is it really possible to avoid a clean install nowadays (and have a stable machine)?

          Thanks

I've literally been able to upgrade one of my machines since edgy. The upgrade process in *ubuntu distros seems to work very well (I too had previous bad experiences with Mandrake - and ended up converting my Mandrake based arcade cab to 'buntu because of it).

I won't say the upgrades have always been flawless: I recall that one upgrade I lost all my TTY sessions. But, the problems I've seen usually afflict a lot of people and have well-publicized solutions.

I guess it can vary with each system...A couple of days ago I installed Intrepid, as per instructions, over Hardy and ended up with a non-booting system. After failed attempts to salvage lost data, I ended up formatting and re-installing Hardy

I don't have lots of data points -- a family member bought an e-Machines desktop system in June of 2007 and asked me to set it up with Kubuntu. I installed 7.04 on it, and have used the upgrade button two times since. Both times (7.10 and 8.04) it has worked flawlessly, although it is a bit of a "patience test" -- the last one took close to an hour to download 900+ packages and update the system, on a broadband cable connection. I always wait a month or so after the release to run the upgrade -- just in case there are any bugs in the process that need to be worked out by the "early adopters".

On my own system, I always install the new version from an Alternate Install CD, partly because I like to test the installation process (which is improving dramatically with Intrepid), and partly because I'm a bit of an experimenter and the new version release provides an opportunity to lose the junk that I've brought in to the system during 6 months of experiments.

This is similar to my experience as well, although i installed Intrepid from scratch on two other partitions, and it booted perfectly, found XP and allowed it to boot, but killed the Hardy installation.

While Intrepid was working i decided that it was much more sensible to have Hardy as the primary OS in any case, so i simply re-installed it again.

Incidentally, it's not only Intrepid which is guilty of this, i ran a virtual Mint install for a while, and was so impressed that i (foolishly) decided to install it, and run a triple-boot system, but it killed Hardy, and to my dismay, XP never appeared in the Grub selector.

I also tried a Debian install (i know.... i'm a glutton for punishment ), that allowed me to boot XP, but broke Hardy.

                  One lives and learns.... eventually.

So i take my hat off to those who did so much work on Kubuntu up until Hardy, it is the only thing i have installed install which doesn't kill - or - at least, seriously maim the rivals.
I have no doubt that Intrepid will also have this capability, it just needs little more time.

Actually, over the weekend I grabbed the daily build of Intrepid Live CD for 64-bit, and installed it, and it went flawlessly -- the new partitioner is a vast improvement, IMO. It saw my sidux OS and created a perfect boot menu.

Of course, I still suffer from a problem in which grub always counts my IDE drive as (hd0) while most Linuces accept my BIOS boot and hard drive sequence which shows my SATA drives first and the IDE drive last. So I always end a new installation with a boot menu that produces Grub Error 15 (partition not found) until I increment the (hdx) numbers by +1 for each OS kernel on the menu. But that's not Kubuntu's fault.

                        There's a new 6 OCT daily build:

                        http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/daily/current/

On Ubuntu Forums they say it has the new 2.6.27-5 kernel, which includes the e1000e patch. So it should be a good one to install.

                          No! No! NO.

                          Don't tempt me, please....

I think i'll just keep up-dating. There was a ~40Mb download when i just hopped back here. :P

Incidentally, i installed the gnome-desktop last night.... and i actually prefer it to the KDE one.

I'll go now -- before my legs get broken.
