    Re: Grub and Intrepid

Here it is (I can't remember all that stuff). I don't really, fully understand it all, but it has solved some of these issues for me in the past. Here's the copy and paste from my notes:

    Chroot (how-to)
To chroot into sda2 from the Live Kubuntu CD at Konsole:
    sudo mkdir /media/fixthings
    sudo mount /dev/sda2 /media/fixthings
    sudo chroot /media/fixthings
(Now you are “in” sda2 as root and can work from there as if you were actually booted into it.)

    Initrd Fixing
From the Live CD, chroot into the sda2 partition.
    Issue the following command:
    sudo update-initramfs -u -v
and let it run and put things together & right for your initrd.

If the update-initramfs does not work, or hangs, you would try to repair initramfs-tools:
First, and doing a chroot into the broken partition, from Konsole, uninstall it, then re-install it:
    sudo dpkg –configure -a
    sudo apt-get –purge remove initramfs-tools
    sudo apt-get install initramfs-tools
Then, try the update-initramfs again (as above).

      Re: Grub and Intrepid

HMMM... thanks guys (and the cake, mike I just did a "solution" from rog's link and got this:

      ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mkdir /mnt/linux
      ubuntu@ubuntu:~$
      ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mount /dev/sda12 /mnt/linux
      ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo chroot /mnt/linux /bin/bash
      root@ubuntu:/# apt-get install initrd-tools
      Paketlisten werden gelesen... Fertig
      Abhängigkeitsbaum wird aufgebaut
      Lese Status-Informationen ein... Fertig
E: Konnte Paket initrd-tools nicht finden
      root@ubuntu:/#
      Any ideas on this one?

Ha! You already lost me! That was quick You might try it the other way -- in reply #15. (as I said, toad got into this a couple times with me, too, but I don't see him around here this morning -- bet he's hiding ).

          Lost? Yeah, me too

I'll try your solution but I guess it basicly implies the same thing.

          I guess this will work:
          Issue the following command:
          sudo update-initramfs -u -v
and let it run and put things together & right for your initrd.
          But I already did:
          Code:
          sudo apt-get install initramfs-tools
          to no avail.

Either way I'll keep you posted

            Re: Grub and Intrepid

I see a lot of failed efforts here trying to use both grub versions to boot both OS installed. But does the simple method of chainloading work?

              Re: Grub and Intrepid

First uninstall it (initramfs-tools) as in Reply #15, then re-install it (or, actually install it). One of the experts at GParted forum gave me that recipe re initramfs, and it seems to work OK, assuming that that is the problem, big emphasis on the word "assuming." All using a chroot into the bad partition (where the "new" Kubuntu is).

                  Re: Grub and Intrepid

                  Wow,

your head must be smoking! Anyway, from what I can see, this little line
sudo: unable to resolve host ubuntu
tells us that you did not have an internet connection available while you were in chroot (but the other stuff uninstalled just fine ). Anyway, this happened to me when I first started remastering and my educated guess is that before you go into chroot you have to bind mount /dev and /proc as follows:

                  Code:
                  sudo mount -o bind /dev/ path_to_chroot_environment/dev
sudo mount -t proc proc path_to_chroot_environment/proc
As I said, this is only an educated guess, but it gets me online in chroot.

                  Have fun!

Smoking..............., well nothing a good swallow of beer can't remedy
                    It is 16:00 over here

.....tells us that you did not have an internet connection available while you were in chroot
                    Hmm.....

I was on this forum in konqueror at the time.
Or does that not effect chroot (first time I have used that )

So, in my case I would have to do:
                    Code:
                    sudo mount -o bind /dev/ /mnt/linux /dev
                    sudo mount -t proc proc /mnt/linux /proc
                    ??

                    Edit:
I tried the method of toad:

I am writing this from the live cd.

                    Now for the reboot.

                    Tha didn't work either.

@toad: Thankx again for the idea but alas

                        Partial success though

I redid a upgrade from hardy and got the same message as before.
                        This time I did:
                        Code:
                        sudo dpkg --force-all -i /var/cache/apt/archives/konqueror-plugin-fsview_4%3a4.1~svn831460-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
                        and then:
                        Code:
                        dpkg --configure -a
I could boot into recovery mode but nothing else so I chose dpkg repair broken.....
and that repaired the konqueror-plugin / konq-plugin issue.

Now I can get to the login screen but no muse/keyboard so I booted up in recovery mode and can do startx get a nice desktop but still no m/kb.

Doing a repair broken... from recovery mode again doesn't help.

Hmmm.... what now. I think there was an issue with that somewhere.

                          Reconfiguring xorg did no good.

And my intrepid cd install still won't boot

@Fintan, any chance of a filesystem problem, or maybe hard drive problem?

Doubtful. It is only 6months old.

Anyway the cd install now boots up. I had to bite the dust and install grub to mbr. I didn't want to do that, just hope grub stays stable until october

Where was GRUB installed? Or, how were you going to boot up Intrepid?
