This is an alpha/beta/rc (pre-) release. Pre-release versions of programs are NOT encouraged for anyone needing a stable system or for anyone who is not comfortable running into occasional, even frequent, breakage. Pre-release versions of programs ARE recommended for developers and those who want to help in testing, reporting, and fixing bugs (or are curious).


Starting from the scratch (earlier > To Intrepid; KDE 4.1) and installing the Kubuntu Intrepid Ibex 8.10 (alpha-1)


Splash problem

With the usplash enabled, session will end on the black screen.

Workaround:
On the Grub screen: pressing e (edit) and removing splash from the grub boot line and the Kubuntu is starting fine.


Login and changing default splash options:
Alt + F2 and

kdesudo kate /boot/grub/menu.lst

Note !
kdesudo is not installed as default.

Changing:

  # defoptions=quiet splash
 to
  # defoptions=

and

sudo update-grub

Searching for GRUB installation directory ... found: /boot/grub
Searching for default file ... found: /boot/grub/default
Testing for an existing GRUB menu.lst file ... found: /boot/grub/menu.lst
Searching for splash image ... none found, skipping ...
Found kernel: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.26-2-generic
Found kernel: /boot/memtest86+.bin
Replacing config file /var/run/grub/menu.lst with new version
Updating /boot/grub/menu.lst ... done

Now Kubuntu will start without usplash as default.

kdesu vs. kdesudo


As default Kubuntu Intrepid Ibex (alpha-1) will not install kdesudo:

kdesudo adept_manager

The program 'kdesudo' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install kdesudo
bash: kdesudo: command not found

The repositories have:

kdesudo

sudo frontend for KDE

and kdesudo-kde4

sudo frontend for KDE4

kdesudo installation will add:

Adding `diversion of /usr/bin/kdesu to /usr/bin/kdesu.distrib by kdesudo'
Adding `diversion of /usr/share/man/man1/kdesu.1.gz to /usr/share/man/man1/kdesu.distrib.1.gz by kdesudo'

kdesudo-kde4 will add:

Adding `diversion of /usr/lib/kde4/lib/kde4/libexec/kdesu to /usr/lib/kde4/lib/kde4/libexec/kdesu.distrib by kdesudo-kde4'

Here, if i: K > Applications > System > Adept manager => Run as root KDE su. KDE is trying to use KDE su not kdesudo and needs root password (FAQ: Root Password ). It is not set => wrong password error.


With the package kdesudo (for KDE 3.5)

There is /usr/bin/kdesu

ls -l /usr/bin/kdesu

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 7 2008-06-28 11:25 /usr/bin/kdesu -> kdesudo

but there is also another kdesu:

ls -l /usr/lib/kde4/libexec/kdesu

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 43088 2008-06-28 18:49 /usr/lib/kde4/libexec/kdesu

Backup

sudo mv /usr/lib/kde4/libexec/kdesu /usr/lib/kde4/libexec/kdesu_original

Linking or "Adding `diversion of /usr/lib/kde4/libexec/kdesu to /usr/bin/kdesudo by user'"

sudo ln -s /usr/bin/kdesudo /usr/lib/kde4/libexec/kdesu

Check:

ls -l /usr/lib/kde4/libexec/kdesu

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 16 2008-06-28 19:33 /usr/lib/kde4/libexec/kdesu -> /usr/bin/kdesudo

With the package kdesudo-kde4

kdesudo-kde4 will install executable in the /usr/lib/kde4/bin/kdesudo

Linking or "Adding `diversion of /usr/bin/kdesudo to /usr/lib/kde4/bin/kdesudo by user'"

sudo ln -s /usr/lib/kde4/bin/kdesudo /usr/bin/kdesudo

Check:

ls -l /usr/bin/kdesudo

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 25 2008-06-29 18:11 /usr/bin/kdesudo -> /usr/lib/kde4/bin/kdesudo

Backup:

sudo mv /usr/lib/kde4/libexec/kdesu /usr/lib/kde4/libexec/kdesu_backup

Linking or "Adding `diversion of /usr/lib/kde4/libexec/kdesu to /usr/bin/kdesudo by user'"

sudo ln -s /usr/bin/kdesudo /usr/lib/kde4/libexec/kdesu

Check

ls -l /usr/lib/kde4/libexec/kdesu

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 16 2008-06-29 18:15 /usr/lib/kde4/libexec/kdesu -> /usr/bin/kdesudo

=> Then The Kubuntu Intrepid Ibex (alpha-1); KDE 4.1 (beta-2) will use kdesudo. With the package kdesudo or with the package kdesudo-kde4

Adept is not working:

Adept didn't work in the intrepid upgrade from HH

Synaptic is fine (which is okay with me )

I wonder why kdesudo is not installed by default

kdesudo is not installed as default.

To the app. "move" to the panel / favorite inkl. icons?

I know this is very alpha but that minimum "user friendliness" should be there

My quess:

At the moment Intrepid has kdesudo for KDE 3.5 and kdesudo-kde4 for KDE 4.0.X (executable path /usr/lib/kde4/bin/kdesudo). They are directly (?) from the Hardy.

Most work has been done to the Hardy Heron point release (bug fix release) 8.04.1 > Intrepid Alpha 1 delayed . Hmm - will there be a Kubuntu facelift release ?

KDM themes

Differences:

KDE3.5

Themes are: /usr/share/apps/kdm/themes.
KdmGreeterTheme.desktop should start with the [GdmGreeterTheme].


KDE4

Themes are /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/.
KdmGreeterTheme.desktop should start with the [KdmGreeterTheme].


Enabling Kubuntu kdm theme

Kubuntu kdm theme is in the /usr/share/apps/kdm/themes.

Symlinking:

sudo ln -s /usr/share/apps/kdm/themes/* /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/

Check:

ls -l /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes
