    Re: Vaio laptop and copied dvd didn't get along ...

    The "straight past cd and boots from hard disk" means you need to change your BIOS to boot from the CD.

      Re: Vaio laptop and copied dvd didn't get along ...

      The OP appears to suggest earlier that the DVD is the first boot device so assuming that is right I wonder whether it's something else.....

      I assume you are dual booting? If so does the drive work in Windows? If so it might be that removing some of the media packages, then purging them and reinstalling might help.

      Another possibility is that something has got messed up in your bios settings to prevent running at boot. You might try resetting your bios settings to the default and seeing if it works then.

      If neither of these work then I must ask whether the connection between the DVD drive and the machine is iffy. Either that or it must really be sabotage or a curse that only a rain dance or some other pagan ritual will get rid of.

        Re: Vaio laptop and copied dvd didn't get along ...

        Well by persisting I eventually got my laptop to re-install Intrepid.
        Having added all the relevant repositories and libdvdcss2 ... I get the same error as before.

        So I guess that must mean that the drive is embuggered?
        Is there some way of resetting a drive or something?
        Could it be because I tried to play a copied dvd?

        Ho hum.

        -----------------------
        Edit;

        I didnt see the above 2 posts;
        BIOS is set to boot from cd.

        No, just Kubuntu, not dual bot

        Maybe it is an iffy connection, but if so quite a co-incidence - I never had a single prob with it before having played 100s of dvds.
        Pagan Rain dance it is then ...

        Can Sony disable a drive in this way?

        Conflict is sleep. Peace is awakening.

            /dev/sda1 is you first partition on your first hard disk. It is not a dvd drive, just as the message says. It looks like you are trying to open your hardisk as a dvd drive.

              Ok, so I opened Kaffeine via terminal then clicked play dvd.
              Then this error ...
              What does this mean?

                  Just a thought...

                  Try installing VLC and playing the DVD with that. Does that do anything?

                    Maybe you should run "ls -al" in your home directory and see if .dvdnav is owned by root, or for some other reason is unwritable.

                        vlc is an alternative player that has native support for a variety of formats. Often if Kaffeine can't play something that one will. Basically what I'm attempting to do is see whether this is a kaffeine problem, whereas Mando hacker is looking at access rights etc to the hardware. Both are possible causes.

                        I have made a mistake though - the package name is vlc not VLC - the terminal is case sensitive.

                              I do not see the .dvdnav directory it can not access in the error message. It could be that the application is supposed to create it when it runs, or somehow it thinks it exists already. You could try
                              mkdir /home/rich/.dvdnav
                              just to see if it helps. If so vlc is a much better choice of players.
