Where did escape go on laptops in X

This seems to have happened across multiple laptops (and on FreeBSD as well!).

My escape key works properly in text consoles. It does not, however, send escape in X. The keyboards are all that new-fangled design where escape has followed control into exile, save rather than at the bottom it is in the function key row.

I can get an escape from ^[, of course, but it seems that many applications (including openoffice) don't recognize this, leaving no way out of certain actions.

On FreeBSD, it seems to have happened with the switch to xorg 7.4.

How do I get this key recognized again in X?

    thanks

      I have the same problem.
ESC does not work at X (sometimes Shift-ESC it works) after the following updates:

      cups (1.3.9-2ubuntu8) to 1.3.9-2ubuntu9
      cups-bsd (1.3.9-2ubuntu8) to 1.3.9-2ubuntu9
      cups-client (1.3.9-2ubuntu8) to 1.3.9-2ubuntu9
      cups-common (1.3.9-2ubuntu8) to 1.3.9-2ubuntu9
      libcups2 (1.3.9-2ubuntu8) to 1.3.9-2ubuntu9
      libcups2-dev (1.3.9-2ubuntu8) to 1.3.9-2ubuntu9
      libcupsimage2 (1.3.9-2ubuntu8) to 1.3.9-2ubuntu9
      libicu38 (3.8.1-2) to 3.8.1-2ubuntu0.1
      libxine1 (1.1.15-0ubuntu3.1intrepid1) to 1.1.15-0ubuntu3.2
      libxine1-bin (1.1.15-0ubuntu3.1intrepid1) to 1.1.15-0ubuntu3.2
      libxine1-console (1.1.15-0ubuntu3.1intrepid1) to 1.1.15-0ubuntu3.2
      libxine1-ffmpeg (1.1.15-0ubuntu3.1intrepid1) to 1.1.15-0ubuntu3.2
      libxine1-misc-plugins (1.1.15-0ubuntu3.1intrepid1) to 1.1.15-0ubuntu3.2
      libxine1-x (1.1.15-0ubuntu3.1intrepid1) to 1.1.15-0ubuntu3.2
      xserver-common (2:1.5.2-2ubuntu3.1) to 2:1.5.2-2ubuntu3.1+ppa2
      xserver-xorg-core (2:1.5.2-2ubuntu3.1) to 2:1.5.2-2ubuntu3.1+ppa2

      I'll try to failback for xserver-common & xserver-xorg-core and I'll tell you...

        No success !

I downgraded to previous and previous-previous versions for both xserver-common and xserver-xorg-core without success !

The problem persist: ESC does not work on X (Shift-ESC is working sometimes).

        Anybody else ?

Does your esc work in consoles? Mine does under either kubuntu or FreeBSD, leading me to suspect xorg.

It also works on some KDE apps, like the Control Center !
              e.g. a pull-down menu, with ESC is closed !

This is confusing me a lot because I thought that was X generic, but is not !

              Any ideas?
