    Display error

    Hey i have a Dell Inspirson 9300. I have dual booted it so i still have the xp and kubuntu 8.10. It all works,but there is a display error. It will have the wall paper on the loggin in screen but when i log in there is no wallpaper. when i load up a program it will show it but copy it onto the wallpaper and i cant maximise the program.If i run it of the c.d it works and i dont get this problem . Am new to Linux so i dont know alot about it but would like some help on it. Anyone having the same problem or know a fix for it

    did you install anything (like compiz)? It sounds like you don't have 'window decorations'...do a search on this forum, or post back more info...if this has happened from your first boot after installing, then you probably have a bad install, and I would reinstall...if it worked for a while, then stopped, it's probably due to something you installed...post back and let us know.

      no it happened when i installed it on it

      I may uninstall it and reinstall it

      Is there anyway of reparing it instand of having to un and reinstallin it

        Reboot your computer, and select recovery mode at the boot menu screen. From within there there is an important option: Fix X. Run that, it might solve your problem.

          If that doesn't work...

          I'm sure there is a way to fix it without a reinstall, but I really don't know enough about it to know for sure what to tell you to do...sorry. If you have your home partition on a seperate partition, it's not a big deal to reinstall....

          that did make me think of something to try though...try renaming the ~/.kde folder to ~/.kde-old. You will have to do this from the recovery mode, otherwise it won't stick. Then reboot. What this will do is force a recreation of all user settings, and maybe that will fix the problem. If not, then you just need to change the name back to revert. to do this, from recovery mode, enter:

          Code:
          cp -r /home/{enter user name}/.kde /home/{enter user name}/.kde-old
rm -r /home/{enter user name}/.kde
          mm0

            I tried the recovery and fix x ,but on affect

            I found out that it does not like my graphic card on my laptop so i think it may be that

              Call me stupid , but I just don't understand what you are saying . Perhaps it needs to be unpicked a bit.

              By the logg in screen do you mean, what is properly called, the login manager? Because that doesn't have "wallpaper."

              Are you able to look at wallpaper or have you tried to install any? On your desktop, in an empty space, RIGHT click and choose Appearance Settings. Under Wallpaper you should see "Image","Picture" and a little blue icon to the left to "Browse. " Below that there is "Positioning" with several options, "Colour" and a button to "Get new wallpapers."

              Does that mean when you put an icon onto the desktop you cannot maximize it? How do you put the icon onto the Desktop? (New) KMenu, navigate to the program e.g. Firefox, RIGHT click the icon and choose "Add to desktop."

              If you look at dibl's "Top 20 Kubuntu FAQs & Answers" at http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3099811.0 and page down to question #14 you will see that several people have successfully used a Dell Inspiron 9300. What I find slightly odd that some say it has an Nvidia card and others an ATI card. Have to installed/used the "application" "Hardware Drivers"?

                  This is a problem with X configuration. You are running a video mode of 400 x 300 or something like that. The flashing and goofiness you see is X trying to find a better mode. You can confirm this by using Ctl-Alt-+ (hold Ctl and Alt while pressing plus) which will switch through the modes. Meanwhile you need some information. What is your display adapter?

                  If you can use KDE as is you can try Alt-F2 and run konsole which will give you a terminal. If that is too hard to read use Ctl-Alt-F1 to get to a virtual terminal. If you use the virtual terminal, login. Then you should run (type then hit enter)

                  "lspci"

                  as in list pci components. On of the lines will be something like
                  01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200] (rev a1)
                  and will tell you what video card you have.

                    hey

                    i have tryed the control alt + and that did not do any thing and when i trying the ISPCI it did not understand it

                    i have found that i have a ATI/AMD prorietary FGLRX graphics driver that it does not that is not activated

                      That does help, but only a little since I have no experience with those drivers. I am sure that others on the forum do though.

                        its fix i used envy program and it got the drivers and fix the display error that i had
