    [SOLVED - Partial] nvidia fullscreen games problem

    I have a fairly old Dell Inspiron 5150, 3.2HT w/1G ram and 64MB GeForce FX Go5200.

    My problem is that I'm able to use all desktop effects (Minus blur) and have no issues whatsoever. The most current graphics drivers are installed, and X seems to work with no issues, however:

    Up to a certain resolution (1024x768) games are okay. Past that res, there's a huge performance lag. Fullscreen games like Torcs or BZFlag will take minutes before I can choose menu options or even exit. I formerly used Gentoo until an emerge -u world broke the system horribly.

    I know my way around some things, but when there aren't any errors to be found, I don't know where to look. X? nVidia? KDE? (I also tried the same exact setup on a Ubuntu (Gnome) with the same exact effects, so KDE would be ruled out (theoretically)

    I have searched the forums, as listed on the front page, and finally have come to a stepping stone. If you plan on running a graphic intensive game, free up the resources by disabling desktop effects. You can try adding them back one by one to see if you can have some still active, but try all at the beginning. The most common for people running an older graphics version would be anything transparent or shadowing. I have tested this and found it to be the source of many problems, though my graphics still aren't where they were with gentoo! I love gentoo for the speed (not the compile times ) and (K)Ubuntu for making one of the most stable and self-configuring distros available!!!

    I'll post more info as I discover it. So far, it's a KDE resource allocation issue I'll tweak with so I can find a way to bypass the desktop effects when certain games are launched. May have to be a mini-program over an executible
