Nobody will help you without some info first:
    1. what sort of graphic card do you have? Chipset? Model?
    2. xorg.conf content
    3. info about hardware driver (version number if you are using restricted one, installation method)

PS If by any chance you have nvidia card, I would recommend using nvidia-settings instead of system settings.

      here is my xorg.conf content:

      # xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
      #
      # This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
      # values from the debconf database.
      #
      # Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
      # (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
      #
      # This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
      # if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
      # package.
      #
      # Note that some configuration settings that could be done previously
      # in this file, now are automatically configured by the server and settings
      # here are ignored.
      #
      # If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
      # again, run the following command:
      # sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

      Identifier "Configured Video Device"
      EndSection

      Section "Monitor"
      Identifier "Configured Monitor"
      EndSection

      Section "Screen"
      Identifier "Default Screen"
      Monitor "Configured Monitor"
      Device "Configured Video Device"
      EndSection

For an entire xorg.conf file it's somewhat too short. Looks like neither your display nor your graphic card were properly recognized. You might wish to back up the file and run 'fix X server" option from recovery mode. Maybe it will help. Check out Kubuntu/Ubuntu forums for info on how to install ATI proprietary drivers.

          Re: Resolution Problems.

Wow, your machine is older than mine. I looked up tuxmobile and most of the installation reports for IBM thinkpad A22p are archived. The others are from 2002, including Debian Potato.

ATI video cards are not the easiest to get working. Try various options to see what works best.
For example, first let Ibex select the video drivers. Your xorg.conf is typical for Ibex. If that is not good, try using adept or synaptic to install the ati restricted driver, then use
Kmenu > System > Hardware Drivers and in the window that opens "Activate" to get it working. It requires a reboot. If that doesn't improve, you can go to /etc/X11 to change the xorg.conf.yymmddhhmmss to xorg.conf and then you should be back to a working system.

Keep searching the forums, try google and something will turn up.
