A Kubuntu version of 'hardware manager'?

I've got a very experienced Windows user friend (actually he's a support guy for his organisation) who is trying to set a friend up with Kubuntu 8.10 (the box came with XP but is hopelessly infected with viruses and they can't find their distribution disc).... the install has gone fairly well, but he wants to see what is installed and/or CAN be installed and is looking for the 'hardware manager' functionality under Kubuntu.

I've been using linux for so long I hardly know what he really wants. Anyone point me to where the information he is looking for is found?

    I am not sure either.

    1) If Linux has been installed and he now wants to find the hardware specs than look at "Find Hardware Specs (Details) on your Computer" on http://ubuntu.wordpress.com/2007/02/...your-computer/

    2) If Linux has not been installed yet and he wants to check what data files are on it he would be better to use the Knoppix LiveCD. Have a look at "System recovery with Knoppix" on http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/li...y/l-knopx.html

Thanks for the command line tip - it was post install. I've sent him the information; it will probably address his needs.

      Thanks again.
