    Notebook power managemenat once again

I've got KUbuntu 8.10 with KDE 4.2 installed on my noteboog HP Compaq nx7300.
I've got problem with power management. Simply speaking - it doesn't work.

In System Settings->Advanced->Power Management there are power management settings. OK. I set thre everything as I wish to act and unfortunately it doesn't act as in setup

    Examples:

    1. I set: "After 5 minutes of idle suspend to disk." 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 1 hour... nothing happens.

    2. I set "After lid close suspend to disk." Closing lid... Nothing. Or closing lid -> yeah! it works!. So sometimes it suspends and sometimes not.

    3. Enable monitor power management. I set, that after 10 minutes it shall switch off. But in System Settings->General->Display there are the same options! But they are set to different values . Which values are more important? Oh, I forget to say: after these 10 minutes nothing happens. Monitor is still on.

I intalled KPowersave. In its configuration there are profiles. But in SystemSettings->Advanced->Power Managemet thera are profiles too! So which profiles are more important? Of course after nstalling KPowersave nothing changed and it still doesn't work as I wish (and as expected).

Would anybody explain me what it is all about and how to cope witch different places of setting the same things?

Saw that on planetkde the other day... perhaps you can get some help from it. Sorry, no direct answer to your questions.

As you can see I have kpowersave installed. Why should I install additionaly guidance-power-manager and after that disable it?

But... I see that there are 2 places to set settings. kpowersave setup and system->advanced->power management. Almost the same settings. Maybe here are some conflicts?

The link you provided tells how to uninstall guidance if you prefer powerdevil. Is your goal to use powerdevil, or to use kpowersave, or to get reasonable control of your powersaving situation? My point is that you might find that kde-guidance-powermanager, or something else, would provide you the ability you want.

Yeah, sorry... I wasn't trying to confuse the matter, but rather just provide some assistance in getting powerdevil working since perhaps that would solve your problem. Good luck!

Re: Notebook power managemenat once again

This is what I really hate in Linux:
                sudo apt-get install powerdevil
                Reading package lists... Done
                Building dependency tree
                Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
                that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
powerdevil: Depends: libplasma2 but it is not going to be installed
                E: Broken packages
I'm only user of it. Why should I be the system integrator too?

Can anybody help what is going on this time?

Re: Notebook power managemenat once again

I did not mean to imply that your link was not valuable, kjjjjshab. It actually contains very good info in a very confusing situation. Powerdevil should be the solution, and it is part to KDE 4.2 so it should be installed. I am now running jaunty, so I am a little out of touch with intrepid, but if there is a powerdevil package there it must be part of 4.1, which would explain why it will not install.

So right now, with all the development happening, version changes of distros and deskops, moving to inclusion of powerdevil in kdebase, it is pretty hard to know just what the situation is, but I think it is true that if he is using KDE 4.2 powerdevil is installed.

Thankfully powerdevil is part of 4.2 and it seems to work on my Vaio.

It is possible that the upgrade to 4.2 did not go as well as it should have and it might be usefull to run

                  sudo aptitude reinstall kdebase kdebase-bin kdebase-data kdebase-plasma kdebase-runtime kdebase-runtime-bin-kde4 kdebase-runtime-data kdebase-runtime-data-common kdebase-workspace kdebase-workspace-bin kdebase-workspace-data kdebase-workspace-libs4+5

In fact I know that at one point some of the kdebase-workspace packages were giving trouble and reinstalling them fixed some "black screen" problems.

I think you have hit the solution. I would do this by editing /etc/apt/sources.list and commenting the ppa lines. Probably some others here can describe the proper GUI way to do it in synaptic or adept.

As I see powerdevil depends on libplasma2, but libplasma2 is in 4.4.1 repositories.

                          What is going on?

In KDE 4.2 powerdevil is not a separate package. It is included in kdebase so when you try to install powerdevil apt tells you it needs to downgrade to 4.1, which has it as a serarate package. I suggest that you leave your repositories as they now are and run
                            "sudo aptitude -f full-upgrade"

This will get you to the latest Intrepid, including backports, and KDE 4.2. That at least gives you a know position and might fix your problem entirely, because you will then have powerdevil installed although it will not show up in dpkg -l. If at that point power managemnet still does not work you should start to use

                            "sudo aptitude reinstall kdebase"

and probably some other kdebase packages.

                              Done as you said.
It seams that it started to work - more or less... Lid close action sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.
