Powerdevil seems to be the power-management backend. You will know whether it is working or not by watching the messages you get when plugging in or unplugging the power adapter.
I use kpowersave to alter settings - to avoid conflicts, also ensure that guidance-power-manager is uninstalled.
Also do a search in adept to see if there are any modules available for your specific machine.
