How do I add a second monitor in KDE4.xx

I want my TV back on a second screen.
Only way I can find is to run nvidia-settings as root and overwrite xorg.
    This doesn't work for me.
    Is this the only way?

What graphics card do you have? Does it have two VGA/DVI outputs or one VGA + TV-out? What drivers are you using? When you say "this doesn't work for me" what is the exact outcome of the process?

Intrepid and Jaunty: Now, with the newer xorg file that's basically empty:

I just wanted to know if there is the normal (recomended) way of getting a 2nd monitor setup.
Do I use Nvidia-settings or should I use the Control Panel tool or is there a better way, like Envy, or is that nulled now?
Or do I have to manually make an xorg file, edit it etc... This way has failed many times for me.

So what is the best way to add a second monitor in KDE4?

I have the same question, running Intrepid on a Panasonic CF-52 Toughbook with the Intel 965 chipset. I don't have Nvidia, so is there another way to have a second monitor? I would like to be able to have a second monitor as an expansion of the desktop.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Re: How do I add a second monitor in KDE4.2

I have not resolved a second monitor issue completely. No normal person would be able to even get it running Im sure.

After giving up for a while I came back to it because my HP laptop decided to kill all the usb ports. Along with the black screen problem it's now useless. GREAT!!!! Thanks HP You SUCK! anyway....

I used an old xorg that got it running.
Using latest nvidia driver installed by the propritay hardware installer
          Have old Chuntex monitor
          And a CRT TV
          Gforce5500 card 256

This works BUT.. opening Konqueror and other apps is very slow, 15 seconds before I can click anything. Then it's click and wait while xorg and konq and plasma use all cpu (watching gkrellm)

Ive been using linux for 10 years, tried all the old tricks. Im very tempted to go back to MS but you know I cannot. Even been thinking going Mac because of the hassle with all linuxes. You know what Im talking about. anyway...

So I have tried NV settings many times, tried older drivers, deleted xorg and rebooted, this one is the worst i.e. default screen, wrong size every time. Tried twinview, xinerama, tried changing sync values, added stuff, removed stuff.
Another thing is using NV-settings gets an error when saving, it cannot "parse" the xorg file, this is a new one and ****s me along with the Ctl Alt Backspace turned off. anyway...

Im getting very close to the end of my rope. Just gimme a hint I havent found. PLEASE.

xorg that works but system slows to a crawl after every mouse-click.

Re: How do I add a second monitor in KDE4.xx

Like how many times does it happen; ya spend three days, like 10 hours and more, begrudgingly make a post to ask for help and...

I went to default, ran nv-xconfig again but tied twin-view again this time and have got rid of the slow mouse clicks and have two screens but now bzflag goes accross both (I know,, windowed mode)where as the tv (kaffiene and klear) will stay on the tv only.

Maan, ya can't have everything. But I'm happier.

            So remove this line
            Screen 1 "Screen1" RightOf "Screen0"

            And turn this off
            Option "Xinerama" "0"

OK im done here.. never again.

Re: How do I add a second monitor in KDE4.xx

Well, I have an ATI chip in my lappy, not nvidia like yours. Apparently xrandr prevented ATI's proprietary software on my laptop to setup multiple screens, s-video out, etc.

              http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1137576

You should try to disable xrandr, restart, connect the external monitor to your computer (turned on) and see if the video config program on your system works. Also, I had to run ATI's command center as a superuser (sudo) that allowed it to modify xorg.conf while I configured settings to use my through S-video TV
