[SOLVED] sound problem (ATI hd 3870)

Hy! I've recently installed kubuntu 8.10, but i cannot hear sound from youtube in firefox, nor in vlc player.
Amarok is the only player where i can listen music.
I have ati hd 3870 wich has some drivers for sound, but in system settings -> sound the preffered device is the sound card(VIA)
Please help me how to setup sound to work in every player.

P.S. I've found on the net speaker-test -c2 -twav for some tests but when i run it i receive this: "ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1008snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Playback open error: -2,No such file or directory"

    Re: sound problem

I have installed Ubuntu and everything works fine. I can hear sound in every player (amarok, firefox, vlc running at the same time), but i want to have KDE. I installed KDE 4.1 in ubuntu and switch to it, but sound is not working (instead of amarok and xine).
I have also installed alsa mixer and run it on gnome and on kde; the result is:

KDE - first column "Card ATI HDMI" and below it 2 volume controllers which are not working
    - second column "Chip: ATI ATI R6xx HDMI" with nothing below

GNOME - first column "Card PulseAudio" and below 4 volume controllers 2 for Master and 2 for Capture which are modifying the volume when I am draging
    - second column "Chip Pulseaudio"

How can I change to have same thing in alsa mixer on KDE?

Please help me, I like so much KDE, and I want so much to have KDE 4.2

      Re: sound problem

      In Kubuntu:

      Code:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install pulseaudio

Then reboot your system, and let's see what you have working.

I'm guessing, kinda, but if pulseaudio likes your chip, you might as well try it.

          Re: sound problem

I finally get it working, I am so glad.
All I've done was installing asoundconf-gtk on Kde, starting it (type in terminal asoundconf-gtk) and selecting my sound card(VT82xx).
          It was so simple.

          Thanks for help

          KDE 4.2 is so beautiful!

            Re: sound problem

Huh! That's an unexpected solution, but GREAT!

Can you edit the title of your first post and add "SOLVED", please? That way other folks searching for sound solutions might find it.

Re: [SOLVED] sound problem (ATI hd 3870)

              Hi,

Kubuntu 8.10 I was also getting the ALSA error:
              (snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave

... but it was a bizarre situation. Sound would work fine for a number of hours but then stop working for no reason. No app using ALSA but ALSA was unavailable. Installing pulseaudio didn't solve anything and when starting gave an error when starting its ALSA module.

Reboot would sometimes solve the problem, sometimes not. VERY frustrating.

Your solution worked for me (so much thanks) but....

... would it also be possible to do the following in a terminal and save installing extra apps associated with asoundconf-gtk (e.g. pulseaudio and various gtk support modules)?

              $ asoundconf list
              Names of available sound cards:
              HDMI
              Live

              $ asoundconf set-default-card Live

I'm not a Linux sound expert so I phrased my reply as a question but reading the asoundconf man page implies this is doing the same thing as asoundconf-gtk.

              Thanks,
              Phil.

                Hi!

Strange, but I did the same thing with asoundconf set-default-card Live but didn't work.
Another posibility is to remove asoundconf-gtk and pulseaudio after selecting your card, because asoundconf-gtk modifies the settings which ar written in a file(but I don't know what file) so I think it's safe to remove those packages.
