Intel 915 problems on Dell 630m laptop (SOLVED)

I'm not one to moan, but I have to say how disappointed I am to find that my intel 915 graphics card (which was humble to begin with) has had its already limited capability sucked out of it since the launch of intrepid. Okay, the flickering that goes on while the KDE slash-screen loads, the flickering that happens when I run any wine application, I can live with those. I gave up using desktop effects a while back as they slow things down a lot for me, so I can do without those too.

I have turned off screensavers because even a basic opengl like euphoria is jerky and grinds to a halt before it has run for very long. Now, to cap it all, even google earth tells me it's running in opengl mode and recommends I update the graphics driver! Needless to say it barely works at all.

None of the above things happened in Hardy, which would suggest that there is something very seriously wrong with the current xorg settings (which of course I cannot change). I have even installed the experimental drivers available on the launchpad site that has unfortunately not improved things a jot, suggesting a fix isn't yet even on the horizon. That is a real pity because an awful lot of good things are going on in intrepid but it completely spoils the experience if you can't view things properly.

Has anyone been able to tweak their xorg settings so as to make some of these things work?

Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

This is the controller in my Toshiba Satellite P105-S6147 laptop. It is not, and should not be considered to be, a 3-D rendering speed demon. But, these numbers are far higher, by almost 50%, than I get in Hardy Heron on the same laptop.

      Code:
      paul@laptop:~$ glxgears
      5322 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1064.274 FPS
      5239 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1047.676 FPS
      5534 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1106.782 FPS
      5243 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1048.423 FPS
      5552 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1110.220 FPS
      5256 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1051.017 FPS
      5571 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1114.063 FPS
      5235 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1046.968 FPS
      5518 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1103.431 FPS
      5218 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1043.519 FPS

        Hmmmm.....

On mine GLXGears produces only 220 FPS, i.e one fifth of the speed of yours

Wonder what is going on here?

Are you running glxgears with no other applications running?

It may just be the difference between the Intel 915 and snowhog's 945GM. CPU speed might also account for how fast X.org is running.

Just ran glxgears on 915GAVL Desktop PC => 1050 fps.

Re: Intel 915 problems on Dell 630m laptop

Out of curiosity I have done the test using 3 live dvds:

                  Opensuse 11 - 660-670 fps
                  Mandriva 2009 - 710-720 fps
                  Ubuntu 8.04 - 920-930 fps

That would suggest there is something amiss here, assuming you are all running 8.10. Wonder whether a reinstall is on the cards.

                      oops, sorry -- I'm on 8.04 (not on 8.10)
(maybe I should pay closer attention)

                        Compositing type - opengl
OpenGl mode - Fallback - won't allow me to change it (saying check x configuration!)
Texture Filter - Nearest - changing to bilinear makes no difference
                        Direct rendering - checked
                        Use VSync - checked

Interestingly I also have a ubuntu 8.10 live cd. GLXgears runs at 870 fps
Finally, running my installed 8.10 but with xfce instead of kde returns only 240 fps, so it looks like this is an x problem rather than a kde one. The ubuntu l8.10 live result is odd though.

                        Very odd
