Re: Kubuntu 8.10 64-bit running slow on my new laptop

Good news! I got the RESIUB to do something. But everything else is ****ed up now.Incem

I installed the envyng when booting from old kenrnel.
Then i rebooted to new kernel. Where the GUI was not loaded.
    Stopped the xserver.
I gave command sudo envyng -t. In the list the latest driver was 177.82.
    I installed it.
It didnt get the GUI running.
Then i rebooted to old kernel. Now it also could not load GUI and i was left to command line.
There definately is driver problem because i get some fuzzy colors and text kubuntu flashing occasionally.
I also tried to reinstall the 180.22 driver, it didnt help.
I hope somebody can help me because in last week i have been reisntalling end deleting Kubuntus and Ubuntus like 15 times. Thought that maybe this time ill try and fix it. If i dont get any help until morning, then its ok also ill just reinstall Kubuntu and dont do the updates and it should be ok.

In order not to reinstall the OS again i had to use LiveCD to get to the forum.

Re: Kubuntu 8.10 64-bit running slow on my new laptop

OK, you've got a GeForce FX 5200 chip. You need to review two things:

      1. Nvidia driver support for that chip:

      http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_d...173.14.12.html

      2. Ubuntu 8.10 release notes:

      http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/810

So, the best you can do with Kubuntu 8.10, with that chip, is the "nv" driver.

I reinstalled Kubuntu 8.10 64-bit. Made all updates, restarted, installed 180.22 and everything works, but i still dont know how to fix that kind of problem without reinstalling kubuntu.

And that old bad delay is back, but its not that bad anymore, its just that sometimes framerate goes from max(60) to under 20 suddenly when i open some new window.

OH, sorry. That's a very nice graphics chip!

Hmm, so you have the 180.22 driver installed, and now the video looks good, but you still have some kind of slowdown? Have you run
              Code:
              kdesudo nvidia-settings
once, and set your default screen resolution? Have you run
              Code:
              glxgears
and verified that GLX is functional?

All that reinstalling is good practice -- there's no cause for regret. But you definitely should be able to diagnose and fix most performance issues without a new installation. On laptops, particularly, the designers tweak the hardware to get the longest battery life possible, and of course there are lid switches, wifi switches, and other features that desktop systems don't have to worry about. So I think there are generally more challenges to configuring your Linux system on the laptops. I know I always have a lot of fun when I install Linux on my Eee PC!

For "slowdowns" or "freezes" -- again the best thing to do is to open the "top" window and watch it, and do your normal activities. If it is a graphics-intensive activity that is the cause of the freeze, you will see "xorg", or possibly "npviewer" if it is a flash plugin problem, become the CPU hog. If it is disk-thrashing, then we'll need to see how much memory your system has and whether you have sufficient swap space. If you are running wireless and using the browser, it can look frozen while it's re-establishing the wireless connection. It's all tuneable stuff -- you just need to work on your troubleshooting techniques and learn to narrow the problem to a single causal factor.

Have you installed the lm-sensors package? I always install lm-sensors then run
              Code:
              sudo sensors-detect
one time to set up the configuration file, then install gkrellm and use that as a monitor for disk activity as well as CPU and GPU temps. You might want to give that a shot.

Re: Kubuntu 8.10 64-bit running slow on my new laptop

As i just had written this text below, my screen froze and i was logged out automatically, good that firefox saved my work.

"The 5200 FX card is in my old pc, where i have apache server set up. Atm im only using my laptop.

I just ran the nvidia-settings, i think my default resolution is 1680x1050, its alway lsike that, i dont understand what u meant.

                glxgears is functional.

I do not use wireless atm.

I dont like constant reinstalling becouse i lose all packages each time that i have installed. I have a project to finish using php and postgresql, but i havent been able to install postgresql for Kubuntu yet.

When i resize windows (dragging from the corner) then framerate sometimes drops to 14. When i move windows it sometimes drops to min 20. CPU gets very busy when i resize windows and ventilation starts to work. And the indicator above CPU's also increases a lot - i dont know what it is.

It is not memory issue, i have 3339M free memory, based on gkrellm, i dont have any swap, i dont think i need."

Re: Kubuntu 8.10 64-bit running slow on my new laptop

You were logged completely out of Kubuntu, or Firefox crashed?

I've never been logged out of Kubuntu -- that sounds pretty severe. The only "normal" thing that would cause it would be a thermal shutdown by the CPU. What does gkrellm show for your CPU temp?

Yes, dragging windows around, especially while Firefox is open, puts a ton of stress on the graphics system -- I'm not surprised that the frame rate goes down and the fan rpms go up.

I wouldn't think you should need swap space, with that much memory. Probably the issue is all about stress on the CPU and graphics system. You could try a lower screen resolution, for example, and see if the situation gets better.

I was sent to the login screen.

gkrellm doesent show anything about CPU temp, i dont know how to enable it.

Yeah, it gets better when i disable KWin effects and lower resolution.

When i had effects on and max reso and pressed alt+ctrl+f12 i was excpecting snow to fall, but instead i got a black screen with blinkink white cursor and had to do rseiub to reboot.

(follow the prompts, "Y" to write to the config file)

Then reboot your system, and do Alt-F2 "gkrellm" -- right-click the top border to configure it. Expand "Builtins" and on CPU check the "Draw fan and temp values separately" and also check "Enable CPU".

I think your CPU is probably getting hot trying to keep your GPU happy.

lol, maybe, or maybe my GPU is not used at and CPU's do all the work since OpenGL can run in software mode also.
My the % under CPU varies from 50-70 when glxgears is running, is it usage or temperature, because i still cant see temperature number anywhere.

Assuming you followed dibl's advice and installed the correct packages and configured GKrellM correctly, this is what it should look like:
                            Attached Files
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

Tx for the picture, i didnt notice those checkboxes before in my window because they dont look correct.

Temperature of my CPU's and GPU starts to rise when i run glxgears.

When i resize other windows then the gears of glxgears stop running whie resizing.
Currently temperature of my CPU's is 55C and GPU 75. I have most of kwin effects turned on. I cant use some of the effects because when i type the key combination to enalbe them, my screen frozes, but mouse moves, still i cant do anything, not even rseiub and i have to use the power button.

At least now i know that GPU is also in good use, since its heating

ok now after couple of minutes after i turned all glxgears off the temps have gone down to 40 and 66(GPU).

Re: Kubuntu 8.10 64-bit running slow on my new laptop

Ah... I have almost given up on Kubuntu. I can't fix the performance issues, can't get all the kwin functions work properly... compiz performance was a lot greater, but i couldnt add multiple desktops and also couldnt use the cube in kwin nor compiz, but at least compiz didnt crash like kwin did many times. I'll stick with my cracked WindowsXP64-bit. It's just does the window handling so much faster. I'm gonna wait a year and then then try kubuntu again, perhaps then things have gotten better + in a way i like the xp gui more, its simpler and i dont know what it is, but fonts are kind of different, window "theme" is more clear and i can see everything more clearly. But yeah the main thing is the performance, i can feel great difference when i switch from kubuntu to xp. The same thing i almost felt when i switched from kwin to compiz but some other issues came then (like huge latency when typing letters in certain forms, like konqueror address bar or kmenu search, sometimes the blinking cursor line didnt move forward at all).

With some kwin functions(like screen maginfication) kde totally crashed, i could only move mouse, alt+rseiub didnt do anything, i just had to power down.

Tx for all the assistance. I had high hopes for kubuntu, too bad I couldn't make it perform as i wanted. Now I'm just tired crawling the forums lookin for answers. I liked kde and linux since it was quite inuitive and easy to learn and probably extremely customizable.

BTW, one of the main things i learned about getting back to kde when i'm dropped to command line is that i just had to uninstall the display driver then i could start the kde and didnt have to reinstall entire os. And then i could install new driver.

For example the reason why nvidia 180.22 didnt work with the next kernel upgrade was that i had compiled it to the previous kernel. I just had to remove and reinstall the driver when i had booted from old kernel.

                                Ok, that's my last thoughts.
