Re: USB drives not recognised or automounted.

    Dibl,

    Right then, some more info.

Anyway, I switched off the PC and rebooted. I went to have a dig around in the BIOS.

In there, I could see that everything was detected. Three identical internal 400GB drives, two USB attached external drives (although they showed up as internal drives), both DVD-RW and DVD-ROM drives. Everything was there.

Then I booted up and chose the older kernel.

Booting back in to Kubuntu, I can now see all three SATA drives. QtParted shows them all. My external USB drives are not shown though - so this problem still exists, even with the older kernel.

This would suggest that the USB problem is not kernel-specific but more linked to the installation of K/Ubuntu, yes?

So how can I track this down further?
[list][*]The USB drives are recognised by the BIOS.[*]They are detected by the kernel and are reported by "lsusb" - they also show up in dmesg when physically connected and disconnected.
    • They don't seem to be assigned a device identifier (eg /dev/sda1) etc. (How can I make double-sure of that??)
    • Without being assigned an identifier, they can't be given a mount point... is this right?

    Struggling here. Any ideas anyone?

    Bag.
