Black Screen after Login, and how to reinstall Kubuntu? (Dual boot 64 bit Vista)

    Hello!
Hopefully I can find a DETAILED answer here.
I'm new to Linux/Kubuntu, so I request simple steps, but for the most part, I can figure stuff out.
Recently, after I login, I get a black screen. How can I fix this? I've tried everything to my knowledge.
Also, I actually would like to just reinstall Kubuntu completely.
I have my disc, and will post my specs below. I am dual booting with Windows Vista, and would like to keep it that way without losing any data on Vista.

How do I know which drive I should overwrite?
I just want to be sure about this, because I have messed up trying to reinstall Ubuntu before and ended up going to a tech to get all my data back off my harddrive and getting Vista put back on (With a previous laptop).

    Heres my specs:
    Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit)
NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTS with 512mb dedicated memory
    4 GB RAM
    Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T8100 @ 2.10GHz

Make and Model (If it helps)
HP Pavilion HDX9494nr Entertainment Notebook PC

    Please help!

It's almost a certainty, that the problem is your video card. NVidia and Kubuntu don't play well together - initially. When you say "black screen" do you mean with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner, or a totally black screen?

With your NVidia card you should follow the steps outlined in HOWTO: Install and use the Envy script installer for video drivers
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

well it WAS working, but I was messing around with the graphic effect options and since then i've had the black screen with a small box in the top right displaying a chart with my frames per second.

This issue is to do with a conflict between your graphics driver ans Kwin.

You will need to rename your kde4 dir.

        sudo mv kde4 kde4-broke

after you reboot your system it should create a new kde4 directory.

Note: you will be given the default kde desktop, any settings you had will be gone.

If you find that doesn't work have a look here, seems there's a potential problem using this method.

If you do decide to just re-install, which you shouldn't! you only need to format your / partition.

You can leave your /home and swap or any others you have there. Any docs etc in your /home will stilll be there.

          Having the EXACTSAME issue.

But sadly, all I get when trying:
          Code:
          sudo mv kde4 kde4-broke
          is
          Code:
mv: cannot stat 'kde4': No such file or directory
I even tried it with replacing kde4 by kde4.1 with the same result.

          I also tried Mac.Cole's
          Code:
          compiz --replace
          and got the reply:
          Code:
Checking for Xgl: xvinfo: Unable to open display
          not present
xset: unable to open display ""
xset q doesn't reveal the location of the log file. Using fallback /var/log/Xorg.0.log
          Detected PCI ID for VGA:
          Checking for texture_from_pixmap:not present.
          Trying again with indirect rendering:
          Checking for texture_from_pixmap:not present.
          aborting and using fallback: /usr/bin/kwin
kwin: cannot connect to X server
Okay, I DID try a coupla Xserver tweaking, and Xfix from the restore boot... maybe a lil too much?
