Getting rid of old sound hardware in OS

I recently installed 8.10 on a new machine that initially didn't have anything but the on-board sound available. Later I added an ASUS sound card to the mix and disabled the on-board sound and Intrepid faithfully recognized the addition and picked the right driver for it. However, it is now complaining that the on-board sound card is not functioning and that it is falling back to the ASUS card.

How can I remove the "pointer" to the on-board card completely so it will just used the ASUS card?
