Is it a USB DVD burner? If so, have you tried to boot to the KDE desktop, plug it in, fire K3B, choose "DVD data project", drop a few files and pressing the "burn" button?

In my experience, K3B usually autodetects the DVD burner.

I do simple videos directly from the dvdauthor command line. For more complex needs, you could try QDVDAuthor, but I've never used it.
