Ethernet connection with Gateway Laptop ML6732

I've got 8.10 installed on this laptop and the wireless wifi connection works fine. If I hardwire the laptop to my modem I can't get the onboard ethernet card to work at all. Is there any software that I may be missing that needs to be loaded? Do the internet connection setting all have to be manually configured ? What about kernel modules? Would I be missing something here? Any help would be appreciated. I'm hopijng there is a quick and esay fix to this.

BTW KDE 4.1.x looks great and works great on this laptop.
