    Kubuntu very sluggish performance

    Intel Pentium 4 1.3ghz
    128mb ram
    nvidia geforce2 mx/mx 400 32mb
ext3 file system [not sure if it has a swap, most likely not]
    Grub installed

I just installed Ibex Kubuntu today and it is running very slowly.
My mouse freezes up but sometimes it will move.
There is a yellow window-type thing to the far right of my screen.
I only see the word type and some other words I forget.
I have no idea what to do, it is running very slowly.
Are there any boot options that I could do so it wouldn't make
    my computer run so slowly?

Your system has less memory than the minimum requirements indicated in the release notes here:

Oh, I saw in wikipedia that the bare minimum was 64mb.
      with 384 as recommended.
Which kubuntu version should I use then to run smoothly?

also, i did the alternate iso install if that makes any difference.
would adding a swap file with fdisk make it run smoother?

It's slow on an AMD AM2/ X2 4800+, 2g RAM. nvidia 7300GT, as well. After a couple of hours I find it's going backwards and only a reboot seems to fix. KDE4.x has some major issues, IMO.

NB: I'm here trawling for the solutions.

          Cheers

@X59, you might want to give Xubuntu a shot, using the Alternate Install CD.

@GUIGuy, open a console window and run "top" and see what's sucking up the resources. Your hardware should run it with no sweat -- prolly a video driver or strigi-daemon or something like that is chewing on it.

I read that while it takes 64mb to install the alternate xubuntu, it says it can run with 192mb but 256 is recommended, i'm wondering if it can run with 128mb?
are there any ubuntu variants that can be used with 128mb ram?

Yea, thanks. But I've been there and done that. It's often xorg, but only when KDE is running. Other applications, notably firefox, amarok, thunderbird and openoffice also runaway, but only after about an hour into a session. This doesn't happen under alternative desktops (gnome, lxde).

However, given I have these consistent issues across three PCs and one notebook, it's KDE that's the suspect, I think. Although, the three PCs were upgraded from Kubuntu 8.04. The notebook was a clean install. All installs are AMD64.

                Cheers

Hmmmm. I tend to shut mine down during the workweek when I'm away from home all day, but I left my Kubuntu 8.10 64-bit system running from last Wednesday until Sunday, and no sign of anything running away. I think Amarok was running (not necessarily playing) for most of that time. So ... I dunno.

I just noticed on my wife's PC, top frequently reports "kdswap0" as running rampant on CPU cycles.

                    Thanks

Hmmmm. Google reports exactly zero hits on "kdswap0".

Did you make a swap partition when you installed Kubuntu? Is it turned on? You can verify that there is a swap partition working by entering in a Konsole

                      Code:
                      free
and observing the output. It should look something like this:

                      dibl@ibex:~$ free
total used free shared buffers cached
                      Mem: 4053604 4021136 32468 0 1360 3047328
                      -/+ buffers/cache: 972448 3081156
                      Swap: 1638620 220 1638400
