Kubuntu 8.10 Ati Proprietary drivers (black video output in dragon player)

    Hey Guys,

I have been having some bother with my Ati Radeon 9600 Pro with Kubuntu 8.10, using the open source mesa drivers out the box everything seems to work fine apart from in the rez 1280x1024 it sets my refresh at 75Hz and my monitor can only hand 60Hz making it go nuts and bring up the monitor menu all the time saying "Out of Range". In order to solve this I have installed the Proprietary drivers from the repos. I could not do this via the GUI though in KDE as the button does not work to "Activate" so did it though Konsole.

Everything seems fine, error message from monitor gone away, can change refresh mode from Auto to 60Hz and all is well until I tried to watch from Avi's when I open them in dragon player I get sound but no picture, just a blank screen.

I have ran the aticonfig initalise tool as well and checked the Xorg.conf and it all appears fine.

Below is a copy of my Xorg conf:

    # xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
    #
    # This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
    # values from the debconf database.
    #
    # Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
    # (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
    #
    # This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
    # if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
    # package.
    #
    # Note that some configuration settings that could be done previously
    # in this file, now are automatically configured by the server and settings
    # here are ignored.
    #
    # If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
    # again, run the following command:
    # sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

If anyone could shed some light on this issue it would be wonderful, if not can someone point me to some open source drivers better than the default ones provided in 8.10

    Thanks for looking,

    Warren

    Hmm intresting,

I just turned off desktop effects and it seems to have solved the problem, how odd, could this be a similar sort of issue to that going around with Gnome Ubuntu and Ati card were video playback is affected by Compiz/Beryl issue.

    Just another thought....
