    ATI 4670 drivers

    Hi,

I have a new ATI HD4670 graphics card but I cannot install any drivers for it. I have a new install of Intrepid, I have also installed Envyng. When I run Envy from the command line and install the recommended driver it tells me to restart, which I do. But when I have restarted, my monitor tells me the V refresh is to high

    After logging in:
    1. Ctrl-Alt-F1 and login again
    2. Envyng -t followed by the password
    3. Remove the ATI driver
    4. Restart
    5. GUI login (screen resolution 800 * 600)
    6. Ctrl-Alt-F1 and login again
    7. Envyng -t followed by the password
    8. Install the ATI driver, Envy only offers the 8.552 version
    9. Restart
    10. Message from my monitor that the V refresh is ?
    11. Ctrl-Alt-F1 and login
    12. There is a message about not finding a resume image?
    13. Restart
    14. When the GRUB menu appears select repair
    15. Repair the X server and resume
    16. Go to 1

If I try the GUI version of Envy, sometimes a crash alert pops up with a message that Kmix has broken.

Mepis v8 beta 5 manages to install an ATI driver, but has some sound issues. Mepis does have KDE3

    "Graphics Performance

Users of NVidia cards with the binary driver provided by NVidia might suffer from performance problems in window switching and resizing. We've made the NVidia engineers aware of those problems. However, no fixed NVidia driver has been released yet. You can find information on how to improve graphics performance on KDE UserBase, although we ultimately have to rely on NVidia to fix their driver."

SnowHog, I think you posted this in the wrong place.

        Re: ATI 4670 drivers

Andrew, I am in the same boat. Seems there is no support at this time. I am watching Phoronix for news. Seems there is reason for optimism that maybe we will see some drivers soon, open source even.

          Re: ATI 4670 drivers

I recently tried Mepis 8 beta 5 and it installed the ATI drivers without a problem.

In recent days I have also tried Debian, Ubuntu Hardy & Intrepid, Kubuntu Gutsy, Hardy & Intrepid. None of them managed to work well the ATI driver.

I have now given up with Kubuntu on this PC. I have Kubuntu Hardy on another PC.

OK, but I don't see how since there is no open source driver and ATI has not released one. Checking you /etc/X11/xorg.conf, what driver are you using?

                Re: ATI 4670 drivers

So did that fglrx come out of the MEPIS repository or from ATI's latest drivers or what? There was some news at Phoronix today about the open source driver:

                http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...05#post6258905

I came to Kubuntu from MEPIS ironically because the MEPIS folks would not provide a simple, straightforward way to compile anything, most importantly the drivers I needed to make my hardware work. Also, the support on the forums was terrible. Ultimately if *buntu can't sort out the drivers for the 4600 series and someone else can I am going to switch. I will probably wait until the end of Jan. In the meantime, I am checking out other distributions (Linux Mint, etc) so I will check out MEPIS as well. Thanks.

                  I don't know

I used "K / System / Mepis / Mepis X-Windows Assistant" (mxconfig), selected the ATI tab and then the fglrx button. Pressed OK and waited several minutes for the magic to happen.

I was expecting the usual install followed by a reboot with a black screen or 640 x 480 resolution. But it worked

I can play games, watch films, change resolution etc.

Andrew, I assume that you have your monitor plug in to the analog/HD15/SVGA port on your graphics card. I have been using the DVI/HDMI port on mine and neither Linuxmint or MEPIS will boot to a desktop (even failsafe) with that port.

My card is a Powercolor HD4670, it has a pair of DVI connectors and something else. I am using the DVI connector furthest away from the mainboard with a VGA adapter connected to a KVM then connected to a CRT monitor (an LG Studioworks 700s).

                      Did you try Mepis 8 beta 5, SimplyMEPIS-CD_7.9.92-beta5_32.iso ?

I did. No joy. I also tried OpenSuse. Also no joy. After my testing and research on the Internet, I have decided that my mobo (ECS GF7050VT-M) is a piece of !@#$%. I ordered a Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P which I hope will work. Maybe someday the numbnuts at ECS will fix their bios and it will work.
