ATI drivers and screen res

Recently "upgraded" to intrepid and now suddenly the highest resolution I can pick is an awful 640x480

Downloaded the latest drivers from AMD/ATI installed them by their directions and it says it was installed successfully BUT I still cant pick anything higher than 640x480 even after rebooting.

just about ready to start pulling whats left of my hair

Have an X1950 card and using the 64bit flavor of the OS

If you downloaded the driver off the ATI site, it says something about working in Kernel 2.6, with no mention of 2.7, which I think is the version we are running.

Did you try the Adept or Synaptic package manager? If not, search for your X1950 there and try that one. Check in your Hardware Driver program under the System menu after install.
