Which nvidia drivers (and how to install)?

At the moment I'm using the free nv drivers, since the nvidia drivers broke upon upgrade. I'd like to get my 3d back so I can play my games.

My primary graphics card is a GeForce 6200. EDIT: It says 6800 in my sig, 6200 is from lspci, I'm not sure which is correct...

Jockey gives me the option of version 96, 173, or 177. Which should I use? I tried on already and it didn't work, but I forgot which sorry.

And/or, how should I install them. (As in, use jockey, or envyNG, or nvidia's own stuff, or what?)

    I also have two kernels - a 2.6.24 and a 2.6.27
Am I likely to get different results regarding nvidia drivers with the two?

My Kubuntu was upgraded from Hardy btw.

EDIT: Also, I have another machine with an old GeForce 2. Am I to understand that 8.10 does not support nvidia drivers for that card, and that if I want hardware acceleration with it, I should stick with Hardy?
I am running Ubuntu 8.10 (yes Gnome) with upgrades applied daily about 0900 UK time. Hardware is Dell Precision 420, 2x 800 MHz PIII, 512 MB RDRAM, nVidia GeForce 6800 128 MB AGP graphics, 18GB SCSI and 500GB IDE HDDs, DVD burner, Hauppage TV card.

My GeForce 5200 works well with the 173 driver.
