Hmmm. I installed it, but I don't find it in the menu, either in "Internet" or "Multimedia". I guess I have to run it from the konsole.

maybe that you didn't install all of the plugins and associated packages that go with it

Interesting. In the console "xmms2" shows the list of command options. "browse" is supposed to show a list of servers. But I ran "xmms2 browse" and it says I need to use a URL. heh heh heh -- diabolical!

Re: Trying to mount my cdrom0 drive to play a music CD

I just went down the list of available plugins and marked 7 of them to add, including "systray integration" and "XML". But it automatically picked up ALSA, which should be correct. But where is the GUI front end?

EDIT: AHA! It was that "systray" plugin that put the GUI icon in Multimedia.

Actually, I just realized that I don't have the XMMS2 main gui client installed. I do have Esperanza (XMMS2-based) and Abraca, also XMMS2-based. I also have the tray icon installed. I am pursuing this because I read that XMMS2 is just like WinAmp. I know from experience that Winamp is killer, that is why I want it. Mainly to see if XMMS2 has a Shoutcast-like feature that I could use.

Re: Trying to mount my cdrom0 drive to play a music CD

I'm not getting xmms2 to add a stream. Probably because I don't know the package. In the konsole, I issue the command:

                Code:
                dibl@ibex:~$ xmms2 add [url]http://64.237.49.76:8005[/url]
                Added [url]http://64.237.49.76:8005[/url]
So it looks right. But then when I check the playlist, I get:

                Code:
                dibl@ibex:~$ xmms2 list
                ->[0/1] mind.in.a.box - Lament for Lost Dreams (snippet) (00:26)
which is the little demo snippet. So it's not actually adding the URL like it said. :P

type xmm on the command line followed by a tab (or two if necessary). tab is a dead useful autocomplete function. One you have the proper name on the command line put a space after it and a & - does that make sense?

For kate it would look like this

                  Code:
                  kate &
The & tells bash that the program should run in the background, i.e. you can continue using that instance of the cli for other stuff.

At the risk of starting a brawl ... have you looked at Amarok 2? It is happily playing a shoutcast stream right now -- just checking.

From AC-DCs famous closing line in "She's Got the Jack": "Thank you, thank you, thank you very much, thank you." I hit the jackpot! Subscribed to Last.fm and then opened Amarok, and in the configuration set Last.fm as my server. Voila! I now have muzick Thanks for all of your help, Everyone. Back to studies for me.

Whew -- that's great! I was afraid I was going to have to make xmms2 work from the command line, and it looks like it has about 200 commands!

                          Hi!

I've installed Kubuntu 8.10 32bit today, and I'm getting the same error with USB flash drives. If I boot from live CD I can use a flash drive normally.

                          Any suggestions?

Sorry, Bud. Your guess is as good as mine. I have given up on trying to mount my cdrom for now. Must tend to other things.

Re: Trying to mount my cdrom0 drive to play a music CD

To get back on topic, I have the same issue with audio CDs. Though I doubt it's due to an Intel chipset, as I have an AMD processor.

The strange thing is that Amarok and Kaffeine, both KDE3 apps, say there is no CD inserted. I have tried with two music CDs and got the same result. I tested again with a data CD, and the New Device Notifier popped up and let me mount the disc.

I also tried Dragon Player and VLC, and they didn't recognize the disc. I tried mounting the disc myself, and it tells me:
                                Code:
mount: special device /dev/hdc does not exist
I did "dmsg | tail" and got a similar response as one of the earlier posts.

(I tried K3b as I'm writing this, and it finally recognized and mounted the disc. So at least that works.)
