SOLVED: HP Compaq nc6400 Mute not working on Intrepid - works perfectly on Hardy

I'm dual booting Hardy and Intrepid.

The buttons on the notebook for mute, volume decrease and increase (along with others) work on Hardy very nicely. I'm still running Hardy on some partitions and installed Intrepid on other partitions, but the mute and volume decrease and increase buttons aren't working, yet. Any ideas?

There seems to be two ways to solve this.
    1. Left mouse click on the mixer icon on your taskbar, then click
on mixer tab at the bottom. A small window opens with Front and PCM -
both have mute boxes. The mute botton on the notebook works the mute on the
front, not the PCM. The default setting seems to be PCM - unmuting PCM and the front
mute, volume decrease or increase works properly.

    2. Right mouse click on the mixer icon - select master chanel. PCM
is selected - change to front. The sound and buttons will work with
either setting but if front is selected then controlled by notebook
buttons. PCM needs to be selected for volume decrease and increase
    buttons to work.
