Problem with external monitor

I am new to Linux have run MEPIS on one desktop for about 2 months. Have now installed Ubuntu 8.10 on it and running with no problem. Last night when laptop with XP crashed, installed Kubuntu 8.10 on it. Setup is a Dell Latitidue D420 with a Dell 1900FP DVI monitor. When configured under KDE external monitor goes blank for about 20 seconds then on for 30 seconds, etc etc.

Booting to GNOME desktop the monitor works fine.

Any suggestions
