    Same Flicker Problem?

I can't tell from peoples' descriptions if I'm having the same flickering problem as others, so I'll just post a quick description and see if that's the case. Upgraded to 8.10 last night. Looked great. Worked perfect. Shut down for the night. Upon booting up this morning, it's like the screen's kind of got a bluish tint, and I can see kind of pixellated movement on the screen (I guess you'd call it flickering). I don't have desktop effects enabled and haven't touched a thing since it was working last night.

Is that the same bugaboo other people are seeing? And if so, have we found a decent fix yet?

EDIT: After another reboot, everything looks fine. Weird, dudes. Just weird.

And then this morning, the problem was back. It's very weird. It looks as if you can kind of see these black bands that almost look like, I don't know, the wireframe for Plasma's effects. But the color's off, too - blue tinted and blocky, like maybe something's weird with the color depth.

Is this an Xorg thing? How can I tell if I've got the right driver and everything? Xorg.conf had no specific info in it.

Are the black bands very skinny and extend the same distance each instance that they appear?

Does a black bands occur every time that you do a key stroke (other actions can also cause them)?

      I had this in beta.

I realized my description wasn't very helpful, so I took some pictures of what I'm seeing. Just to be clear - those black concentric circles shouldn't be there. They're not part of my desktop. It should be the default Oxygen wallpaper.

And for what it's worth, here's a graphic I got at the same time using KSnapshot. For whatever reason, it looks normal - so my eyes are seeing something different than my machine:

Does that make any sense to anyone? Where should I be looking to try to fix this? It only happens sometimes, and I'm not sure why or when it will.

I have that problem in the current version.
I am running Ubuntu 8.10 (yes Gnome) with upgrades applied daily about 0900 UK time. Hardware is Dell Precision 420, 2x 800 MHz PIII, 512 MB RDRAM, nVidia GeForce 6800 128 MB AGP graphics, 18GB SCSI and 500GB IDE HDDs, DVD burner, Hauppage TV card.

            Re: Same Flicker Problem?

I saw this flickering problem happening when I had a different driver from the one I'm running today. I've a GeForce 5200 and the screen flickered each time I pressed a key, sometimes with a black band appearing.

In my case, installing the 173 nVidia driver solved all the problems except for the garbage that is displayed in new windows before they are painted for the first time. This for me is not that bad.

The blue bands and wrong colors suggest to me either: (a) broken or defective video cable (b) broken or defective monitor or (c) broken or defective video card. The fact that the problem disappears after a reboot suggest (c) broken video card.

The only way to be sure of course is to try each of the components in another system where they are working.

It looks like a color depth issue to me, where the display is only using 16 colors or something.

              I had to put this line into my xorg.conf file to even get it to run;

              Section "Screen"

              Defaultdepth 16

Although, as the post suggests above, it could be a hardware issue. It seems as though the red and green are missing from the display.

No, they all work fine under windows, and in maybe 1 in every 20 boots into Kubuntu. I don't have an nVidia card; just the standard onboard video card that came with the laptop. This is absolutely a Kubuntu issue, and one that has me ready to dump the OS entirely after years of satisfied use.

This thread over at ubuntuforums.org had the fix.

                  http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=963959

Just posting in case anyone else has the same problem. It's an SIS video card thing, I gather.
