Kubuntu 8.10 and Windows Mobile 6 Device - anyone got it working ?

    Hi there,

has anyone got the connection and syncronisation between Kubuntu and a windows mobile device working ?

For several years now I tried to make it work with a pocket PC after every new release and failed. Since we lately got several new WM6 devices in the family, I tried it again with various instructions I found in the internet. I never got it working, neither on 8.04 nor, after the upgrade- on 8.10.

From what I figured out, the packages synce-hal, librra0-tools and librapi2-tools should be involved. But neither the packages found in the original hardy/intrepid repositories not the ones on ppa.launchpad.net are working.

I purged all related packages after my unsuccessful attempts, so I would really like to install a working version from scratch.

Can anyone give me a hint which version (combination of versions) of packages which work ? I am not afraid of bypassing the package management and compiling something myself if this dioes the trick.

    Regards,

    Jens

Depending on how desperate your situation is, I'll tell you how I resolved the situation a couple years back, when it was important to me and before Kubuntu had much of a capability to connect to things like mobile phones.

Install the free VMware Player on Linux, and install Win XP on the VM, and since VMware supports passing through the USB connection to the VM, you can hook up your USB thingys and, with their Windows software apps, do your synchronizations, and so forth.

Of course, this does not put the applicable information "in" your Linux system, but it does put it "on" your system, if you see what I mean.

This topic is of interest as I am about to replace my mobile phone which will likely be based on Windows Mobile. I want to be able to sync my Kontact mail, contacts, calendar and tasks with the phone.

The Kontact homepage mentions KitchenSync (opensync):

        http://www.kontact.org/kitchensync/index.php

I have also seen SynCE on SourceForge which is specifically for Windows Mobile devices and I think this is also needed:

        http://www.synce.org/moin/FrontPage

It has a page on setup for Ubuntu which does mention that some things might not work because KDE4 uses an experimental version of opensync (the page was last updated in September so things might have changed with Intrepid):

        http://www.synce.org/moin/SynceWithUbuntu

Don't know if this is of any use but once I get my new phone, sometime in the next 2 weeks, I will try and get this working.

[solved]Re: Kubuntu 8.10 and Windows Mobile 6 Device - anyone got it working ?

          Hi there,

          finally got it solved:

On a fresh installation of jaunty (9.04) I used the following FAQ:

          http://www.synce.org/moin/SynceInsta...u/ModernDevice

Since there is no Opensyncsupport for KDE 4.2 in jaunty,I decided to give Evolution a try. Now I can synchronise contacts and calendar entries Evolution with my HTC S710.

A bit sad that I had to switch from Kmail to Evolution for that, but IMHO still a better compromise than not having synchronisation available at all. Thanks to whoever made SynCE finally usable in jaunty.

          Regards,

          Jens

Interesting, thanks for the update, it gives me hope that this will be sorted at some point in the future.

These days the ability to synchronise with mobile devices can no longer be considered a 'nice to have' feature but is expected.
