    running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg stops after keyboard | SOLVED

    hi,

    had the same problem with hardy heron but upgraded to 8.10 release candidate to see if it solved anything.
    i tried to run dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg but it stops after a few keyboard questions, nothing about video. when i reboot the kdm doesn't start. doing xfix on recovery mode sorts it out to where it was but im still stuck with low resolutions.

    here is my xorg.conf

    Thing changed from Hardy onwards. Don't boot into your normal kernel. Boot into Recovery. That has an option "Try to recover Xserver." Have a go at that.

      thats what i did and it recovered fine. but i still need to get dpkg-reoncifgure xserver-xorg to go past the questions about the keyboard.

        So what do you need to do with the keyboard?

        Have you tried System Settings>Keyboard and Mouse, or for Regional Keyboards System Setting>Regional and Language>Keyboard Layout

          nothing to do the keyboard. but its supposed to ask some quetions about my video settings. which it doesn't.

            Unfortunately it has been "improved" since 7.10, and no longer includes video re-configuration.

            The new xserver xorg package uses an xorg.conf file like the one in your original post, unless you use a proprietary driver and over-write it.

            What is your graphics chip, and what resolution are you looking for?

              "sudo lspci | grep -i vga" gives me this:

              01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200] (rev a1)

              im looking for anything above 800x600 (ideally 1280x1024).

                Well, as luck would have it I have the same video card and the same install. Here is a copy of my /etc/X11/xorg.conf for all it is worth:

                  hmmm, didn't do it for me. i enabled the driver and put your conf file in (from recovery mode). but the xserver seems to crash just as it starts (i manage to see a black screen and a cross cursor) before dropping back to text mode. there is an error message saying:
                  xhost: unable to open display ":0.0"

                    ok after many tribulations i managed to get higher resolutions.

                    i uninstalled and then reinstalled the nvidia-glx-173 drivers. i then ran nvidia-xconfig and restarted the xserver
                    before that meant that the xserver would crash but now it worked fine except instead of getting 800x600 as maximum resolutions, i got 640x480 >
                    i tinkered with the xorg.conf unsuccessfully until i used an old one from last that i knew worked before the whole mess started and it worked like charm. back to higher resolution and needing to adjust everything being small again

                    i'll paste the display parts of my xorg.conf in case someone has the same problem. might find it useful. always backup your xorg.conf's
