If you have copied text output that contains formatting (colors, highlighting, etc.), please do not enclose it in QUOTE or CODE tags. Just right-click your mouse and choose "Paste Without Formatting" or similar (Paste as plain text).
They won't be "seen" until you insert a diskette. So, are you saying, that even with a diskette inserted, the drive does not show up?

It's amazing (to me) that "the developers" consider the floppy drive passe - which must be the case when the kernel is sans the module "by default." :P

do i have to do that all the time to use the 3.5 " drive
No. modprobe adds the module to the kernel so it is available when you boot into that kernel.

Snowhog is correct, as usual. The module is installed, until you upgrade to a new kernel. I guess we'll see whether the kernel devs are swamped by a public outcry for a return of a default floppy drive capability -- I'm not betting much on that one.
I think floppy drive support is going where tape drive support is .... :P
Which, unfortunately, I think is correct. To bad too. Follows the current trend of PC manufacturers to not include a floppy drive - everything is going to CD/DVD instead. At least one can still purchase external floppy drives - I have one - - my current laptop didn't come with a floppy drive.
