They won't be "seen" until you insert a diskette. So, are you saying, that even with a diskette inserted, the drive does not show up?

            Code:
            sudo modprobe floppy

One is left only to wonder, what are those teeny, tiny files that you put on a floppy diskette?

It's amazing (to me) that "the developers" consider the floppy drive passe - which must be the case when the kernel is sans the module "by default." :P

It is a kernel bug > Bug #255651: floppy disk drive not detected (module not loaded) in Intrepid Alpha 4 kernel 2.6.27-2
                  or
Bug #254009: Unable to mount floppy drives in Intrepid

No. modprobe adds the module to the kernel so it is available when you boot into that kernel.

Snowhog is correct, as usual. The module is installed, until you upgrade to a new kernel. I guess we'll see whether the kernel devs are swamped by a public outcry for a return of a default floppy drive capability -- I'm not betting much on that one.

LB, I don't think it was an accident. I think floppy drive support is going where tape drive support is .... :P

Which, unfortunately, I think is correct. To bad too. Follows the current trend of PC manufacturers to not include a floppy drive - everything is going to CD/DVD instead. At least one can still purchase external floppy drives - I have one - - my current laptop didn't come with a floppy drive.
