Can't install fglrx in Kubuntu 8.10

Trying to use Adept to install the ATI binary X.Org driver, I get the following error:

    APT Error. Context:
    Package download failed,
Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.,
    : ,
    : ,
    : ,
    : ,
    : ,
    : ,

Is this a bug in 8.10 or am I doing it wrong? Is there a way I can see what packages I have that are "broken" so I could update / reinstall / remove them?

    Thanks everyone.

ATI has not updated the fglrx driver since September 17th and it is not compatable with xorg 7.4 which 8.10 natively supports.

You are stuck with the unstable mesa drivers until ATI releases new drivers but don't hold your breath while waiting.

I know your pain, my laptop freezes when switching resolutions so I'm stuck with 1024x768.

Bummer, maybe I'll try 8.04 again.

Re: Can't install fglrx in Kubuntu 8.10

        If it's of any help...
I have an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, and had severe problems with KDE finding the correct video settings, but if i booted first into the Gnome desktop, it found them, and i could then hop back to KDE.

But i got a constant, similar message to yourself... so don't feel lonely.

What i've done now it to replace Intrepid with another Hardy install, and added: deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubuntu hardy main to the repository list, then Fetched Updates, Upgraded, and the (3.5.10) KDE 4 works like a dream, no video problems at all.

It may work for you as well.

A word of warning, i found that it is not wise to enable the ATI driver: fglrx, but to leave it as the default fglrx, but your mileage may vary....

          Rather than an edit:

What may or may not be important is that when i first install, after a few seconds a message pops up informing me that restricted drivers are available, would i like to install them? and i do that even before up-grading the installed packages.

I didn't have this problem (radeon 9800xt), everything looks great and works, but without the fglrx drivers things don't run at their full potential.

However, thanks to sjhstorm, I see that the next catalyst version has been released into our repositories, and it supports x-server 1.5, so it'll work in ibex.

I'll give it a shot when I get home and update here with the results.

Ok so I have the latest ATI drivers installed according to the link. However none of my compiz effects are working. Not a total loss at the moment as I need to figure out how to make my virtual box work again but if anyone else has any ideas let me know. I have a ATI Radeon X1600
Kubuntu II on both Laptop and Desktop and some servers here at the office

I managed to get these latest fglrx drivers, from the multiverse repository section, I think. These may have helped me with the problem I had with getting to the KDM login screen after booting.

I can't say they work that well though. Not in terms of effects, but just the tendency to hang when restarting or shutting the system.

That has been the problem, at here, from Catalyst 8.1 onwards. There was a bug that did make Xserver freeze on shutdown if atieventsd was running. It has been marked to fixed by AMD but still Xserver is freezing here.

                    Workaround at here is to:

                    1) Remove atievents daemon
                    Code:
                    sudo update-rc.d -f atieventsd remove
                    2) search and kill atieventsd processes
                    Code:
                    ps -e | grep atievents
                    and
                    Code:
                    sudo kill <id>
                    3) Restart (may freeze on the first shutdown)

Ater this, Catalyst/fglrx is working here without freeze.

You don't have to remove atieventsd. The problem is that atieventsd is looking for a path that doesn't exist.
                      Try this instead:

                      Code:
                      sudo mkdir -p /var/lib/xdm/authdir
                      sudo ln -s /var/run/xauth /var/lib/xdm/authdir/authfiles

... and after the latest updates :

                          xorg-driver-fglrx changelog tells:

                          ...
this seems to work at here

Actually, you can run fglrx drivers from ATI but you have to downgrade your Xorg to 7.3. The last time ATI updated the driver site was October 15, 2008. As to when we'll see working ATI drivers for Xorg 7.4, we won't have to wait long. They are currently working on them and they will be released sometime in November. Hope that helps those that would like to run 8.10 with the proprietary ATI drivers as I do on 8.04. Will be attempting 8.10 but not as a primary OS. Will get back with more info as the new drivers come available. However, during testing with just the 8.10 drivers loaded with no fglrx. My Compaq Presario R4125 with the ATI 200M chipset was showing around 1200fps with glxgears so the open source code is getting better with the help of AMD/ATI.
