Re: Intel GMA915 and severe Screen Flicker

Does anyone know all of the "Options" that can be set for an Intel card? Maybe we're missing something like that in our xorg.conf files?

Re: Intel GMA915 and severe Screen Flicker

IIRC there was only really resolutions and (perhaps) colour depths.

This is an acknowledged bug, for the 915 at any rate, I suspect yours won't be any different.

Thanks for the link!! I added to that Bug Report, so I hope it helps it get noticed.

          Good!

The fact that my GeForce 9600GT flickered too, until I installed the Nvidia driver, makes me suspect it is something deeper in the architecture than just an Intel thing. But, the search for a fix has to start somewhere.

Funny that it didn't affect my Eee PC, though. Must be some particular video/VGA frequencies, or something like that, that it affects.

Told it was a duplicate. Re-posted on the "true" bug report. It seems to affect a lot more than the GMA915. Ranked as Medium though. For me this should be "High' or even considered "HOT"

Re: Intel GMA915 and severe Screen Flicker

So, in /etc/X11/xorg.conf any clues why I would have

              Section "InputDevice"
              Identifier "Configured Mouse"
              Driver "mouse"
              Option "CorePointer"
              EndSection

              Section "Device"
              Identifier "Configured Video Device"
              EndSection

              Section "Monitor"
              Identifier "Configured Monitor"
              EndSection

              Section "Screen"
              Identifier "Default Screen"
              Monitor "Configured Monitor"
              Device "Configured Video Device"
              EndSection

and where I could find where the "configured ..." would be.

              Still flickers.

I had to step back a kernel, no eth0 network on a 10/100

Re: Intel GMA915 and severe Screen Flicker

I think that is how Intrepid configures a VESA display -- that's exactly what my xorg.conf looked like when I booted into Recovery Console, and had it run "Fix X" upon first installing 8.10. And yes, my 9600GT flickered once every 7 seconds, for as long as it took for me to install the Nvidia driver.

Re: Intel GMA915 and severe Screen Flicker

Well, I've never been able to get my Xorg.conf file to look any other way no matter where I reconfigure it, konsole or recovery. That is part of the Auto Detect as far as I can tell. Luckily I kept my old config file before upgrading and manually re-worked it. Still don't know if it even reads that file. It's supose to be the first thing it looks at. Just don't know any more. I really do not like the new config file/auto detect because of issues like this one. Any way, I have the flickering with the X configured Xorg.conf and with my custom Xorg.conf. Really bummed about it right now.

Re: Intel GMA915 and severe Screen Flicker

I read yesterday (somewhere) that the new 8.10 system doesn't even read xorg.conf unless it is directed there by a proprietary driver or something along those lines -- that xorg.conf is essentially becoming a useless appendage in the new video display system.

                    Odd, huh? :P

Re: Intel GMA915 and severe Screen Flicker

It makes troubleshooting difficult in my opinion. Especially when there appears to be no clear cut way to get to any configuration files that is controlling the process or a GUI showing the configuration.

Re: Intel GMA915 and severe Screen Flicker

I am getting flickering on an ATI 2400 HD card using the radeonhd driver. I can't use the proprietary driver as it conflicts with the Ibex version of Xorg. Apparently, AMD is working on upgrading their proprietary driver to work with the new X, but until then I guess I am stuck without my dual display and this stupid flicker. I'll explore the KDM/GDM swap and see if that does anything.

They are working towards making X autoconfigure itself, which makes it so nothing can mis-configure the xorg.conf file causing X to not start. Plus, with all of the different video cards add input devices, there is no way to write a xorg.conf file that can handle every combination and to write a tool that generates one, is not so easy either.

Re: Intel GMA915 and severe Screen Flicker

Can someone clarify what they mean by flickering? I have an intermittent problem with what I call 'noise' in the form of a constant interference on screen in vertical bars unevenly spaced across the screen.

                          I'm using an ATI HD4850.

I know it's not the monitor as it is shared with another computer and I'm almost certain it's not the graphics card as there's no problem during boot up during the 'kubuntu' loading screen until the login prompt appears. I can see it now but the next time I boot it won't be there.

Another reason why I do not think it the card is that occasionally I see a slight overlap on the very left-hand edge of the screen as if one copy of the screen has been overlayed on top of the other and I have to adjust the placement of the mouse pointer accordingly when selecting things.

                            this stupid flicker
That's a nice way of putting it.

Sounds as thought there are more wide spread problems that are similar. I'm wondering now if it really isn't X but a Kubuntu/KDE4 issue.

I have the same annoying flickering problem after upgrading to II. lspci gives
Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 03)
as my graphics card. As with everyone else it's not there if I log in to GDM only KDE.
                              Apart from that it's great.

Thanks, you reminded me of my Ubuntu 8.10 Live CD - no flicker! As Moonrise says, this looks like a Kubuntu/KDE problem which is a big relief as my installation is on a brand new PC so I couldn't know for certain that it wasn't a hardware fault.

This is probably a good time to remind ourselves that this is still a beta release.....
