Re: Intel GMA915 and severe Screen Flicker

I guess you are right. No flickering what so ever. It's weird working with GNome. I miss my KDE4. I didn't reinstall though like I was ranting about. Thought why not just install Ubuntu Desktop. So I did. At least I still have my Kubuntu Bootup Splash and ShutDown Splash. Really Weird. I haven't used Ubuntu since Warty. I wish I knew how to report this issue. I really don't know what to say other than flickering. I get no errors anywhere. The only issue I have is FF3 does not have any Windows Decos. Can't figure that one out. Must be missing an Ubuntu required file for FF3.

Does Kubuntu II flicker just the same when you boot it from a Live CD?

Yep. Kubuntu Beta Live CD flickers every 7 to 12 seconds. I can get Ubuntu to do the same, but only when I reconfigure and make KDM the default. I did that to get the Kubuntu Login Splash. Flickered at that point and then every so often in Ubuntu (not as often as in Kubuntu). When I return GDM as the default I don't see flickering at all.

Must be the new version of KDM, then -- I hope they fix it sooner rather than later.

I have that same graphics chip on my Asus Eee PC. Guess I'll leave it sidux/KDE 3.5.x. :P

Have you tried the LiveCD on it? I'm just curious to know if I'm the only one or not. I've found similar bug reports but none I thought was directly related. I also didn't know what to report.

Got my Windows Decos back for FF3 in Ubuntu. F11 then F11 again.

I'll give it a shot tonight, and see what happens. The Eee PC doesn't have an optical drive, but I have a USB CD drive that I can use with it.

Window decorations -- yeah, that's a sore spot! I really like the Emerald decorator, but it would appear that the KDE devs are staying up late at night figuring out how to kill it off.

I've satisfied myself that it is Emerald, not Compiz, that disables Alt-F2 in KDE 4. But I can live with that issue -- that first popped up in the 4.0.x version that was made available with Hardy. But now (since II Beta) I can't even get Emerald to stay set as the default window decorator -- kwin appears to kick it right back off at boot time, compiz or no. I haven't given up on Emerald, but they are really making it tough ...

Prolly for the Gnome desktop it's still a happy member of the family, huh?

Yes and I think it is because Compiz was initially set off as Gnome. I have to admit though, with the release of KDE 4.1.2, their Cube view is quite nice. Still haven't figured out how to get Sphere and Cylinder working though.

Hope they are working on a solution!!

I really miss KDE4 on this machine!!

Believe it or not, I really haven't tested Beta on my Desktop. It has a similar GMA display. When I get home, I'll pop the LiveCD in and see what happens.

Re: Intel GMA915 and severe Screen Flicker

Yeah, lots of flicker on my i-740 video. Upgrade from 8.04 went swimmingly well for the most part. Screen goes black sometimes when working in konsole, opera and firefox also for < 1s. I thought it was compiz, but no.

                      Go to gnome, not me.

For my 4-1/2 year old machine I am going to do a clean install with 8.10 ubuntu network server, wicd, and go with getting kde 3.5.10 on if I have to compile it. Too much eye candy. I get more information at a glance with the 3.5 apps. ktorrent a huge step backwards for seeing information and rtorrent is much faster downloads presently for me. There is some nice things the transparent parts are nice, but I do a fair amount of cli.

To not have had a lts with KDE 3.5 series is just plain wrong. My other machine is going to get hardy backports enabled and sit with Hardy for awhile. For those of us who have stuck with Kubuntu and gotten some to adopt it for a long time and have older machines - we deserved a lts with 3.5.9 or 3.5.10 and a good tested xorg.

Re: Intel GMA915 and severe Screen Flicker

Just did a quick check on a machine here that has a GMA X3100. Didn't notice the Flicker at all. There was some initial jumping around when logging in, but after it gets to the desktop, it does rather well. So is it KDM or the Intel Display driver? Since the Intel driver works on my GMA915 under Ubuntu, then maybe it is KDM, but why so specific to display card? Hmmmmm.

I don't think it's KDM as such as I am logging in with GDM and still get the flicker to which you refer when running kde4. As you've reported it's not a problem with gnome.

OK, Moon, I just burned a 32-bit Kubuntu Live CD from the 8 OCT daily build, and booted it on my Asus Eee PC.

The good news is -- it's really beautiful -- came right up in correct screen resolution, looks good, played the music, and no flicker!

The other news is -- lspci says it is actually a "Mobile 915GM/PM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller", so maybe it's not exactly the same chip as yours.

If I didn't think it would take me the rest of the week to configure wireless, I'd be tempted to install Kubuntu II on it. But I don't use it that much, and it took forever to get it set up the way it is .... :P

Anyway, that's my data point for you.

Yes, I also just tested 8.10 latest build on the Desktop I'm typing this from. Ran beautifully. No flicker. Nothing but a great looking OS that functioned. I really don't know why it is flickering. Under the Gnome desktop I don't get the flicker when GDM is set to the primary manager. It has something to do with a multiple of things I believe. Not just one or the other. I just really hate to have to stay with Gnome on that machine (did what I could to spruce it up). I love KDE4...don't want Gnome (sorry Ubuntuers)

Also weird, I think both of my Intel cards are really in the same family.

lspci shows mine is the same card as dibls, with the exception that it's a revision 3.

My II is fully updated so I assume I'm at the same stage as last night's build? Sadly for me the flicker is still there.
