Re: Intel GMA915 and severe Screen Flicker

True...It is Beta. Try going to the last link above and report your same experience on that Bug Report. Hopefully they'll work on it expeditedly (if that is even a word ). I really love how they blended KDE4 into Kubuntu. Very well done. Just that dang flicker is all.

Re: Intel GMA915 and severe Screen Flicker

It doesn't seem like an xorg bug or a problem with the intel driver. I just installed ubuntu-desktop and the flicker isn't there in gnome. I have no idea how to find out which part of KDE is causing the problem though. Any ideas?

Re: Intel GMA915 and severe Screen Flicker

On the question of gnome, I have just been able to reproduce the flicker whilst in that environment..

If you go to system/preferences, the moment I go near the screen resolution settings I get that flicker. That makes me wonder whether it might be something a bit deeper than KDE4.

        Anyone else experienced that?

        Ian

Yep....Which still kind of points to X. Why Ubuntu seems more stable and what controls that in KDE4 I have no idea.

Re: Intel GMA915 and severe Screen Flicker

This is a known bug in the kernel in combination with X-Org.
            Already handled here. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...el/+bug/218334
If using the latest Ubuntu (Beta) - it should go away.

Not quite the same thing, but I can say the flickering does not appear to occur in Ubuntu, but it still persists with Kubuntu. I have used the latest Daily build of both and it still does the Flickering. My screen has never gone black, it just flickers every 7 to 12 seconds.

Actually - the Locking was in the early versions only if you activated glx.
It is linked to 3D Acceleration.

Re: Intel GMA915 and severe Screen Flicker

The flickering seems to have stopped. I just updated via adept so maybe that was it.

Edit: Just rebooted into 2.6.27-7 and it's back worse than ever

I don't know if it's related but I had 2 python apps (python and python minimal?) crashing around about the time the flickering stopped.

Re: Intel GMA915 and severe Screen Flicker

There were updates today to xorg and also a new kernel, 2.6.27-7. You guys might want to update and dist-upgrade and then see what you have on the flicker front.

                      Flicker is still there, unfortunately...

Re: Intel GMA915 and severe Screen Flicker

                        Looks like it's this bug:
                        https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...de/+bug/278471

my flickering is actually "redrawing elements of the desktop in different locations" as described by ibi in that thread.

                        Also from that thread:
This is the KDE equivalent to bug #245383. A component of KDE is calling XRRGetScreenResources excessively. And for many cards/drivers/setups this causes a screen flicker. Although some drivers, like -ati, have been improved to avoid flickering in many cases, the best would be to fix KDE in the same way as gtk+2.0 was fixed.
So it seems like the cause of the problem is known.

No go for me either. However, ilowman, thanks for that link as well. I posted there as well since that one was closer to my problem than the one the Bug site moved me to.

New libplasma2, kwin, kdm, etc., yet the flicker lives on...

Yep...did another Reload of Adept and more updates showed up. Installed all of those and, yes, the flicker still lives and seems more prominent as well.

Re: Intel GMA915 and severe Screen Flicker

Well...I was able to get the Ubuntu Live-CD to flicker the same way as Kubuntu. It doesn't do it at the 7 to 12 second frequency though. Only when you do a certain function and that is:

Control Center --> Hardware --> Screen Resolution.

As soon as I click Screen Resolution, it flickers just like mine is doing under Kubuntu. The only difference is that is stops once the Screen Resolution window appears. I'm going to post this on both of those bug reports. Hope it helps.
