I've looked all over the place for a solution. I've tried to reconfigure X and it doesn't EVER let me choose the driver any more. Is anybody else experiencing this same screen flicker with the Intel integrated GMA915 or other Display card? I really love II on this laptop (see sig below for details) but this flicker has really started to annoy me. I believe it is an X issue as it does the flickering with Desktop Effects on and off. I've verified what drivers are installed I just can't figure out how X is deciding which one to use! There is a lack of a place in KDE4 right now to change that. I've tried editing xorg.conf with what was originally there on older installs but it doesn't seem to read that file anymore. Anyone!!??

Re: Intel GMA915 and severe Screen Flicker
Yep. On my Nvidia GeForce 9600GT, when running with the VESA driver, it flickered once every 7 seconds. I was not sure whether I would get the Nvidia driver installed, or go nuts, first. :P
Once I got the proprietary driver installed, no more flickers.
Do you have the Intel driver installed yet?

Re: Intel GMA915 and severe Screen Flicker
Yep...about every 7 to 12 seconds.
As far as I know it is. What command to check? From Adept, it says the Intel, i810, i740 and Poulsbo drivers are installed. Don't know if the last two are really needed, but that is what was installed by the installer, not me. Is there a tool similar to Envy for Intel?

Re: Intel GMA915 and severe Screen Flicker
Just added that and rebooted. Still have the flickering. This is what xorg.conf looks like. Like I said, I've added to this file before and X doesn't seem to care about that file anymore. Ever since they started "auto-detecting" everything, changes I make to that file don't seem to take at all, laptop or desktop.
Code:Section "Device" Identifier "Configured Video Device" Driver "Intel" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "Configured Monitor" EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Default Screen" Monitor "Configured Monitor" Device "Configured Video Device" EndSection

Re: Intel GMA915 and severe Screen Flicker
Hmmm. Well, if Adept shows the driver "xserver-xorg-video-intel" is among those installed, then I dunno how to make it any better, Moon. I guess you could try aCode:sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Re: Intel GMA915 and severe Screen Flicker
One more notion -- you could try (with Adept) to remove the xserver-xorg-video-intel driver and install the i810 driver instead. It used to be recommended for that chip, but supposedly xserver-xorg-video-intel is the superseding driver. No change needed to the xorg.conf file -- it is still "Intel".

Re: Intel GMA915 and severe Screen Flicker
Well searching that I found this: (WW) intel(0): Bad V_BIOS checksum
Searched online and found quite a few people out there with that and with no real solution. It seemed to be tied with vRAM and BIOS shadowing, which isn't enabled on my machine, but the memory the card uses is dictated by the system BIOS. Also, it has no issues under other OSes like GG and HH. The flickering is really driving me nuts!!

Re: Intel GMA915 and severe Screen Flicker
More than likely. I have my Home on a separate partition. I'll just install over II and go from there. I don't see them getting this fixed any time soon if at all. HH ran well. I'll just install KDE4 that way.

Re: Intel GMA915 and severe Screen Flicker
Well...I tried Ubuntu II 8.10 Beta Live-CD. No flickering there, and I even turned on all the Eye Candy their Live-CD would allow. Ran very smoothly. So is this an issue with kwin instead? I wish I knew how to report this. I get no error messages, and the one Warning I found in X-Org log is also in Ubuntu's. If I have to, I will install Ubuntu. There's no way I'm going back to the other
Plan on trying Kubuntu's beta Live-CD tomorrow and will report how it does there. Hopefully it has something to do with the original install.
