    Intrepid - nvidia - xorg.conf WEIRDNESS

    Hello All...

I have read SEVERAL posts in various forums which cover basically
the issue that i have been experiencing, however, there is a WEIRD
    little glitch which befuddles me....

I have an nvidia geforce 6100 nforce 405 graphics card.
I tried both the 173. and the 177. versions and they both
actually work for me BUT when i set my resolution via
''sudo nvidia-settings'' and click ''save to config file'' i get
a parse error on line 34 of section module in xorg etc etc..... and is says:

''Disable is not a valid keyword in this section''

Here's the weird part.... I checked /etc/X11/xorg.conf and there is
NO ''Disable'' ANYWHERE in the entire file!!!!! So is there some
OTHER xorg.conf hiding somewhere that i haven't been told about
    or what?

I could have posted a copy of xorg.conf but i figured it wouldn't
be necessary since the ''Disable'' doesn't exist within the file
it must be looking at a different file

    Anyone else experience this?

    Cheers!
    Dave

I have never seen that error -- dunno what's behind it.

FYI, after I installed the new 2.6.27-5 kernel yesterday and booted it (I have the e1000e blacklist problem on the prior kernels), I installed the kernel-headers package, then I had no problems whatsoever installing the Nvidia 177.78 beta driver, using the downloaded installer. You can get it here:

    http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=120052

If you install it, and then afterward you still have the same problem setting the resolution, that would suggest something elsewhere in your system is causing the problem.

I've the same problem with my MX400, even worst, I re-install the driver and run the nvidia-settings utility I got error that I don't have any nvida on my system !! I need to reboot, run in discovery mode, re-run Envy few times and suddenly it is fixed ! but still have one problem that, my Philips LCD monitor keeps complaining I am using 1024x768@85Hz, which I should change to 70Hz, after I changed that I got the error I should change to 85hz !!

Beside that problem I still can't fix that ugly unreadable fonts on Openoffice and few other apps, seems no fix to it > >

What driver are you using? According to the 8.10 release notes:

        http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/810

the X.org in 8.10 is not compatible with the 96.xx driver. And according to Nvidia:

        http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

the correct driver for the MX400 would be 96.43.07.

So, you're stuck with the "nv" driver, I believe. For which you do not need EnvyNG.

I am using 96.43.09 beta driver and it works with 8.10.
I think I installed it from the backports repository.

I am also using this driver which Envy recommended ! I don't know why it gives me something I can't use, now I am installing the 'correct' driver from nvidia see how it goes....

I installed the driver but it said I need to download a different kernel, since I must run in console mode to install the driver, but my GPRS connection relies on knetwork so I can't download anything, then it tried to compile the kernel but failed too
