Yep, I discovered that the hard way, Rog. :P

However, I downloaded the kernel package that you linked, "linux-image-2.6.27-5-generic_2.6.27-5.8_amd64.deb" for my 64-bit desktop system, and saved it on a USB stick.

Then I booted my 8.10 system (daily build 4 OCT 08) which of course had no ethernet, copied the deb into /tmp, and used gdebi to install it. In the first attempt, gdebi threw up an error from parsing the /etc/apt/sources.list file, so I commented out all the sources and tried again. Second attempt, gdebi asked if I really intended to force the kernel installation, and I answered "yes", and it went through the complete installation process including modification of the /boot/grub/menu.lst file.

Upon reboot, I had my 2.6.27-5 kernel, and ethernet. I then un-commented the sources in /etc/apt/sources.list, and ran sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade and also got the kernel header files, and with that I was able to install the new Nvidia 177.78 driver on the new kernel, set up my desktop, and now it's a fully functional Intrepid Ibex system. Compiz works (with Alt-F2 still functional), Firefox works with flash, etc. etc. -- looking very good here!
