Re: How to get flash nowadays

Firefox seems to be running properly which it hasn't for months. It looks like all I need is Flash.
Epiphany seems as good as ever, except for crash on flash. (that's got a nice ring)

So, I want to ask advice before I go on. From dibl's TopTwenty#9 I get:

    32-Bit Kubuntu Users:

    sudo apt-get remove gnash gnash-common libflashsupport mozilla-plugin-gnash swfdec-mozilla && sudo apt-get install alsa-oss faac faad flashplugin-nonfree libk3b2-extracodecs libmp3lame0 libtunepimp5-mp3 libxine1-ffmpeg non-free-codecs sun-java6-fonts sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin unrar
Which, if any, should I do? Perhaps the whole lot?

Re: How to get flash nowadays

I got it working. One problem is that every second time I install the Flash version 10 .deb, Firefox reports it as version 9. Something is off in the code I guess.

It is unfortunate, but despite trying to keep track of what I did. It is still a mystery what really did it. Here are some additional steps in case someone else wants something they can try.

      I removed the nonfree again:
      sudo apt-get remove flashplugin-nonfree
Then I deleted the whole flash directory:
      sudo rm -r /usr/lib/adobe-flashplugin/
      Then I re-installed the Flash:
      sudo dpkg -i install_flash_player_10_linux.debuninstall

That gave me version 9 again! But:
      sudo apt-get remove swfdec-mozilla
      sudo apt-get install swfdec-mozilla

Gave me version 10 and it worked!

It seems that the order of installation is important. I don't know what's going on. My machine seems to work like a charm except for this - and I really push the envelope too. Oh, and Epiphany, the other browser in question here, no longer crashes when it sees flash!

I don't really know how I did it, but I won the war. Thanks all for help and encouragement.

Edit: This thread is pretty messy, so in case someone comes here and tries to figure it out. I guess I should clarify that the Flash software I used, came from the Adobe site. They have a Ubuntu version and you just download it. It is a "dot deb". The way you install that is, go to the download directory and type "sudo dpkg -i (name-of-download)". Then it will automatically install in a directory called /usr/lib/adobe-flashplugin/. Before you install it you can rename it to something shorter (eg flash10.deb) if you like.

Re: How to get flash nowadays

I'd go for it Juul. First nuke the ~/.mozilla folder. Also you've probably got the libflashplayer.so plugin in other places -- if you want to start "clean" you need to clean it out of there.

I've got 64-bit Kubuntu 10.04 and 64-bit Debian (sidux) here, so you have to understand that I need to use the last available 64-bit plugin, which you can see in my download folders. Bearing that in mind, from my booted sidux system here is what I find:

        Code:
        don@sidbox:~$ locate libflashplayer.so
        /home/don/.mozilla/firefox/plugins/libflashplayer.so
        /home/don/.mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so
        /home/don/Downloads/libflashplayer.so
        /mnt/KUBUNTU/home/don/Downloads/libflashplayer.so
        /mnt/KUBUNTU/home/don/Downloads/libflashplayer.so/libflashplayer.so
        /mnt/KUBUNTU/usr/lib/flashplugin-installer/libflashplayer.so
        /mnt/KUBUNTU/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so
        /mnt/KUBUNTU/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so_bak
        /mnt/KUBUNTU/usr/share/ubufox/plugins/npwrapper.libflashplayer.so
        /mnt/KUBUNTU/var/lib/flashplugin-installer/npwrapper.libflashplayer.so
        /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so
        /usr/share/mozilla/extensions/libflashplayer.so
I updated my Kubuntu system last night, and checked out the Firefox browser (haven't put Chrome on yet). It is running the youtube stuff fine. On this sidux system I have both Firefox and Chrome (chromium-browser Debian version), and flash is working.

        Hope this helps.

EDIT: Oops -- too slow on the trigger. Glad to see it's working there.

Oops, we crossed posting times there. As you see, I did delete the whole shebang and started over. All is fine now - but it didn't go smoothly.

Regarding the chromium-browser (Debian version) I'll give that a try. I like using a bunch of different browsers. They're all really much the same when you're looking at a web page though. I use Opera too. I'm not stuck on Firefox by any means. However what it has going for it is some web development tools that the others don't have. Showing divs and id's, analyzing CSS, giving colours in hex, etc, etc. That stuff is just not something one wants to forgo.

That is very true. Chrome is noticeably lighter on the CPU, though. But you are correct, it is not as well developed as the mozilla browsers.

Reply #16: Your formula didn't work here. I do definitely have version 10 installed, but aboutlugins shows only v 9, and I still can't play the link I posted (saying I need to upgrade to version 10). Frustrating, as more and more sites require 10, but my time for this is so limited I can't spend all day on this one item.

Re: How to get flash nowadays [SOLVED]

As you may have already discovered, the version number is a lie.

                    Code:
                    $ aptitude show flashplugin-nonfree
                    Package: flashplugin-nonfree
                    State: not installed
                    Version: 10.0.1.218+really9.0.277.0ubuntu1
When I downloaded the DEB from Adobe's site, that package also gave me V9. The guys at adobe are just jerking us around I'm afraid.

In order to get the latest Flash player plugin for my Firefox I went to Adobe's site and downloaded the file install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz which is a generic plugin for all Linux distros. I then untarred the file as root into my Mozilla plugins directory. When done I had the file /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so.

Again, no go here. This is ridiculous that's is so not-transparent (where I'm at). I can only conclude I've overlooked something so obvious that ... what?

For the record, I did, as Telegard and GreyGeek both say:

                      cd Desktop
                      sudo tar -C /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/ -zxvf install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz
                      libflashplayer.so
                      (this didn't work)

                      So, also tried:
                      sudo tar -C /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins/ -zxvf install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz

                      Puts in both:
                      /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so.
                      /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins/libflashplayer.so.

But didn't work. This site still tells me I need to upgrade to version 10:

Re: How to get flash nowadays [SOLVED]

I have a feeling you actually have version 10 but that there is a problem with either the way Kubuntu or, more likely, the new Firefox handles this. Did you actually delete the /usr/lib/adobe-flashplugin/ directory before installing flash? Also, the thing that seemed to do it for me was to do this afterwards:
                        sudo apt-get remove swfdec-mozilla
                        sudo apt-get install swfdec-mozilla

                        It's a Kunundrum.

Re: How to get flash nowadays [SOLVED]

Thanks Ole Juul. Didn't work. I'll be darned! Tried sequential combinations of steps, etcetera & nada.

                          So, now with this:
                          sudo tar -C /usr/lib/adobe-flashplugin/ -zxvf install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz

I now also have the .so file here:
                          /usr/lib/adobe-flashplugin//libflashplayer.so.

                          In 3 places now.

No question that I do have version 10, yes. But the site(s) do not think so and they give the message to upgrade to version 10.

                          Firefox 2.0.0.22, btw.

Ugh. That's a very old version of Firefox. You probably already know why I think it is a really bad idea to run such an old browser. I wonder whether or not that might be inducing the Flash version problem indirectly.

Mike, please try this and post your output. I want to make sure you don't have an old version of Flash plugin hiding somewhere. The browser can only load one copy of the plugin at a time, so who knows how it decides which one to load if there are multiple versions?

                            Code:

Qqmike, if you're running such an old version of FF then there might not be any harm in using another version or even browser. I'm guessing you are not running a lot of plugins, which IMHO would be the main reason to use FF in the first place.

Important note: in my case, the problem came at the time that I upgraded from FF3.5 to FF3.6 and a new kernel. Note also that my flash problem appeared to not be directly related to FF because Epiphany had a problem as well. That problem went away too and I didn't do a thing to Epiphany.

Edit: @Telengard: You might still be right about the "old" FF version but my old one was 3.5 so ...
I did completely delete the FF directory and others that seemed related. They all came back with a new FF install.
