Partially solved: Trouble streaming video/x-ms-asf with Firefox/Seamonkey

    Hi
For many years I lived in Iceland, and now I want to see how that sorely humbled, brave island is faring. So I turned to their national radio/TV (RUV.is).

After having cleaned out some of my codecs and plugins following the excellent guide at
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=766683
I was able to stream radio broadvasts, but not TV.. I suspect there may still be some files lying around on my system that are generating a conflict, OR....:

Real Player tells me the file I want to stream is video/x-ms-asf. Is this something that can be dealt with?
    Any ideas out there?

I am using KDE 3.5, Mozilla, Mplayer, Mozilla Mplayer plugin.
At the advice for Linux users posted on RUV.is, I have installed (from repos)
    gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg,
    gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad
    gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly

Result: Transferring data,.... and finally "Connecting to server..." and that's it. If I copy the URL, I can play it in VLC, which somehow manages to translates the URL to something entirely different and finds the stream. But it would have been nice to play it simply from the RUV.is site.

I would be much obliged for any help.

The matter is partially resolved thus:

I carefully followed the instructions that applied to my version of 32-bit Kubuntu (Hardy)
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=766683
The guide is fairly long, but I followed it scrupulously. I still could not play the streams in Seamonkey/Firefox.

I installed the newest versions of
    SMPLAYER from launchpad
    https://launchpad.net/~rvm/+archive/smplayer
    and MPLAYER
    https://launchpad.net/~rvm/+archive/smplayer

I still could not play the streams in Seamonkey/Firefox.

    BUT

now when I copied the link I was able to play it in KMplayer, for some reason.
