[SOLVED] Opera installs but running it leaves a process with no window

I have a problem with Opera running but not producing a window. The task manager shows a process that's taking a heckuva lotta memory, but visually nothing happens.

I've just re-installed 8.04 (9.10 installs but doesn't boot on my Dell Dimension 3000) followed by installing Opera 10.01. The same thing happens on the new installation as on the old (I currently have two 8.04s on my internal hard drive).

Any ideas? Apparently something in my /home files is causing this, since a brand-new Opera on a brand-new 8.04 fails. But I'm hoping I don't have to remove all my email and contacts and bookmarks and so on to get this to stop happening.
Kubuntu #19517 (but of course I am not a number, I am a free man!)

With Opera closed try the following:

    Code:
    mv ~/.opera/opera6.ini ~/.opera/opera6.ini~
    Then retry Opera.

PS. There are known issues with having Opera upgraded on top of itself, at least I remember reading somewhere on the Opera forums about it not being good. I still do it all the time... so who knows.

Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately it didn't work. I renamed the opera6.ini file and started Opera, but got the same result. No windows, an apparent runaway process...

UPDATE: Tried running Opera from the command line and got this:

      _________________________________________________
ERROR: ld.so: object 'libjvm.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored.
ERROR: ld.so: object 'libawt.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored.
      _________________________________________________

"jvm" is probably referring to a Java Virtual Machine, no?

P.S. In this case I installed a new Opera on a new 8.04 with an existing /home, just to make sure that's clear.

These errors are likely unrelated to your problem.

        Troubleshooting:
        1. rename ~/.opera to ~/.opera.old (you won't lose any data as you can rename it back if you want)
2a. If opera starts correctly with new config, it's definitely a configuration issue, you can then start copying the configs from ~/.opera.old to the new ~/.opera directory, starting opera every once in a while to see what causes the problem.
2b. If you still have the issue even with a fresh config, try installing the latest 10.10-rc3 snapshot .deb package available here: http://snapshot.opera.com/unix/rc-4728/intel-linux/ (download the qt3 version for KDE3 or the qt4 version for KDE4)
        3. Report back to us

EDIT: Ah, re-read your posts, if this is a new opera install (without old configs), you can skip steps 1 and 2a

Re: Opera installs but running it leaves a process with no window

Wow, thanks so much for all the help!

When I rename ~/.opera and start Opera, it works fine. So there's something in one of my config files that's sending a rogue process, probably named Sarah Palin, off into hyperspace.

Any ideas about how I could narrow it down? I realize I can copy my contacts.adr and so on back, one at a time, and see what happens. And that will work. But if there are any special things I might start with or watch for or something, lemme know.

          Thanks again for the assistance!

I'd recommend copying back first the stuff you need (contacts, mail, bookmarks, adblockfilters etc.) to see if they load ok. Most of the subdirectories should be fine, too (although you probably don't need the caches etc. in the new installation).

Cool, many thanks for the help! I've got Opera running, now the deal is gradually to restore the data. I appreciate the guidance!
