    Video playback crashes

Hi, I've not been posting for a while. Got a new laptop, dell studio 1737. Been running 8.04 on it for the last month. Never tried video playback till a

few days ago. 2-3 seconds after video starts the whole screen goes black for a second and then comes back, but frozen. Nothing responds. i.e.

keyboard, or mouse. Just frozen so have to do a forced off button shutdown. Happens with vlc player and kaffeine. I've tried from current jaunty live

usb and allthough it doesn't freeze up the video seems to attempt playback for a second, but nothing. Video plays fine on the winDoze vista side.

I'm at a loss. I don't see anyone else out there with the same problem. Though I may be missing a key, keyword when searching. Any ideas

anyone? I got to get ready for school so I'll check back later. Thankful the vista runs. I''ll have to update my system specs later. When I have the

    time.

    Hi

The first and easy thing is to try is to disable desktop effects, assuming they are enabled.

Hey, I've got EXACTLY the same issue here, but have been too busy to post, and have resorted to using Vista for movies, though it pains me. I usually use mplayer, but no joy. The worst thing is why I accidentally come across a movie file in Kphotoalbum, then I have to reboot and start again...

Wow! I guess it is annoying enough to make it worthwhile try the live CD for Karmic and see if it has the same problem. You can install the restricted extras in a live session and test ...

Yes, what graphics does this thing have? Are you using an open source driver or a binary one?

Does what 'thing' have? Are you talking about my laptop, kubuntu, mplayer?

I'm using an Acer 4810t. Will have to check the details.

Yeah, I meant the laptop. I thought you were having the same issue, but also with the same laptop as in the original post. To check for binary drivers you can go to Hardware Drivers in the System KMenu.

Not using any proprietary drivers, it seems.

                      How about the restricted drivers?
                      https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

It shouldn't crash without them, but maybe worth a try. I have used Hardy for a few weeks on my new Dell Mini 9 with no issues on video playback. I am hoping some basic package is missing and that's all.

I've tried live versions of v. 7, v. 9.04, and karmic. all with the same results. I'll check an see what video drivers this 8.04 is using.

                          Re: Video playback crashes

I've checked via K->System Settings->Monitor and find video card set at VESA, and Monitor 1 set at plug and play. I've tried dell.com/support but they like lots of other manufacturers are all for support on winDoze visTa stuff. Limited search finds about linux. Everything else seems to work fine, its just the any video playback locks the whole machine and needs a manual shutdown via power switch and reboot.

Also: linuxser, I think we are getting somewhere. You should not be getting a crash. But the vesa driver is a generic driver that is loaded when graphics are not properly configured. Nothing should work for vesa, besides basic things like displaying text. Do you know what graphics does the laptop hve? Do you see any options for graphics in Restricted Hardware?
