SOLVED: openOffice 3.1 on Hardy - how?

In Adept "manage repositories", I have just tried to add the two lines (and key) to access the PPA for openOffice as explained here:
    http://ubuntumanual.org/posts/175/up...intrepid-hardy
However, my "apt-get update" does not yield anything!
Does that mean that the PPA is no longer available? Or is there something amiss on my absolutely brand new Kubuntu Hardy installation. (I had messed up things by trying unreliable Nokia software and had to reinstall everything :P).

On this forum I found install directions from June 27 here:
    http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3104767.0

Do they still apply? Before I had to reinstall, I had the oOo 3.1 running beautifully after running the procedures detailed at http://ubuntumanual.org/posts/175/up...intrepid-hardy
Odd if this should no longer apply, not least since there is not a word on the site to indicate something has been removed.

Does anybody know? Would be much obliged.

Read through this carefully, and do read it all before you do anything: How to Install OpenOffice.org 3.1 on Ubuntu 9.04

Yes, the title says 9.04, but that's why I said to read it all first. It too, has repository information for Hardy. I scanned through it. There are indicated steps that require the existing Open Office be removed before the updated version can be installed. So, again, read it completely.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

      Thanks, Snowhog!

Yes, I will read it very carefully and post a reply as to the results in the course of a day or two.

        No go.
Scrupulously taking the first steps outlined in the very clear and detailed tutorial at the above link, I added to the repositories and inserted the authentication link. But I never got the warning ("Not all updates can be installed") from the Update Manager. For one thing Kubuntu doesn't have any other update manager than Adept. So I was not guided through the "partial update". I therefore manually removed all the files/repositories listed (using adept and finally Konsole. And reinstalled oOo. But what do I get? Good old oOo 2.4.

Weird. There seems to be ferocious resistance against us Kubuntu Herons using the precious oOo 3.
Pity also. I do a lot of proof reading, and oOo 3 has taken a great leap forward to improve readability of "changes".

        Any ideas out there?
Thanks, Snowhog, anyway. The directions were crystal clear, but as they wrote "we haven't tested it [for 8.04]". And I am no worse off than I was when I started.

Re: openOffice 3.1 on Hardy - how?

          Hi

I've been using ooo 3.1.1 for some months now on Hardy. I just downloaded the debs from the oOo site

          http://download.openoffice.org/

          Removed 2.4 then ran

          Code:
          sudo dpkg -i *.deb
          followed by

          Code:
          sudo dpkg -i openoffice.org3.1-debian-menus_3.1-9393_all.deb
          in the relevant folders

Actually I installed 3.1.0 and when 3.1.1 came out oOo suggested I upgrade, which I did and it has never broken.

I don't think you can expect kubuntu to create a Hardy-specific version as Hardy is an old boy.

Thanks, Jim! That did the trick.

I am spelling out the details in a separate post, so others can enjoy too.

Excellent. And that's the first time I've ever actually given successful advice here as opposed to receiving it!
