Yesterday's updates killed flash video (youtube, cnn, etc)

The 10-08-2009 update killed FireFox's ability to play flash videos on my 64bit Kubuntu Karmic installation.

I opened Synaptic, put "flash" into the search box and located every installed file dealing with flash and marked them for update. Ditto for the 64codecs.

That restored the playing of flash videos.

Just a suggestion but I got tired of this - plus I wasn't wild about running a 32-bit binary on a 64-bit system unless I absolutely had to, so I purged flashplugin-nonfree and flashplugin-installer and just installed the 64-bit flash player from Adobe Labs. You can find it here -

          http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html

The gzipped archive contains only one file - libflashplayer.so and you just stick it in /usr/lib/firefox/plugins

          Hope this helps -

My primary partition is the 64bit Kubuntu Karmic and I'm also trying to avoid 32bit apps when ever possible. In that regard I have already tried what you suggested and was disappointed when the 64bit flash player hung my video. I had to use the magic keys to reboot. I had just restored functionality to flash player when the "update" broke it.

I've found that trying to avoid 32bit apps is difficult because not all of the 64bit apps are polished enough, like the 64b flash player, or the 64b Stellarium. Some 32b apps, like Second Life, do not run well under the ia32lib library and NO 64bit version is available.

However, the situation is a LOT better than it used to be, and can only get better.

Sorry to hear you had trouble - my own experience with 64-bit flash has been much better than the 32-bit version.

Just a suggestion - are you sure there's only one libflashplayer.so on your system?
