cannot update or install using KpackageKit

    Hi,

I stalled the latest Beta this morning and when I try to using KPackageKit to install and carry out updates I get:

You do not have the necessary privileges to perform this action

How do I change this so that I can update and install.

    Thanks

    Ashley

Probably it's a bug -- mine (from Alpha 6 but now updated) does not ask for a password at all. That's definitely a bug.

    Open your Konsole and

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install synaptic
Then use synaptic to update. KpackageKit may or may not get fixed -- you can try it in the future and see if it works correct. Also, you might be able to start Kpackagekit from a Konsole window with "kdesudo" prefix, and get it to work right.

FWIW This bug is mentioned in the release notes https://wiki.kubuntu.org/KarmicKoala/Beta/Kubuntu

NOTE: This is a beta (pre-) release. Pre-release versions of 9.10 are NOT encouraged for anyone needing a stable system or for anyone not comfortable running into occasional, even frequent, breakage. Pre-release versions of 9.10 ARE recommended for Kubuntu developers and those who want to help in testing, reporting, and fixing bugs. Please do not use this in a production environment with data or workflows that you cannot do without.

I'm not posting this to be negative - far from it. It's nice to hear about what is working and what is not. I just hope that it is being reported to the above links as well.

Re: cannot update or install using KpackageKit

I replaced Kpackagekit with Synaptic and installed the Update Manager. Now everything works. I really don't know why Kubuntu couldn't stick with a tried and true proven package manager than try to reinvent the wheel.

With a Synaptic install one pulls in some GNOME dependencies but it doesn't affect the look and functionality of the KDE desktop.

kpackagekit has worked off and on for at least a month that I know of. It breaks about twice a week

I'm not going to be able to get to my PC (on laptop in hotel room) for a couple of weeks so I've decided to wait for the next release and start again then.

Thanks for the info and suggestions.

even using "kdesudo" through the konsole does not work. hopefully there will be an update soon.

Something about this beta I noticed was that installing from iso when connected to the net had better success than without net connection, it seemed to clear up a lot of bugs and crashed post install.
