do you have the proprietary nvidia driver installed (does not install by default)?

        mm0

P.S. If you are not sure, open the konsole, and enter:
        Code:
        sudo nvidia-settings
and if an nvidia window comes up, you are good, if not, you need to install the driver...post back if you need help with that, or just do a quick search on the forum.

Either you don't have the nVidia driver installed, or it does not have glx enabled. Either way -- you get no Compiz.

So, to install the nVidia driver, you follow carefully the process described here:

          http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...4892#msg164892

disregarding the change in version number to more recent versions. First time through it, you may find problems following the procedure -- just post back with where it failed and what the error said. In your case, when the installer asks if you want a new xorg.conf file created, your answer is "YES".

          Good luck.

Re: 3D cube Desktop - Compiz, need help

I do already have the nvidia drivers installed. as far as i have found in the other research i have been doing i need to upgrade to kde4 in order to get the compiz like effects.

in order to upgrade i went into kmenu>system>softwaresources>third-party software and added 'deb http://ppa.lauchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubuntu hardy main

after that i went into Konsole and entered 'sudo apt-get update && sudo install kubuntu-kde4-desktop

that ran through fine and after it was done i rebooted the computer and the login screen had changed but nothing else did and as far as i can find on the comp i still just have kde 3.5.10

so can someone please help me upgrade to kde4

            thanks

Look at K Menu > System Settings > Desktop > Desktop Effects > All Effects
Scroll down to Window Management and check Desktop Cube

                The activation shortcut is Ctrl+F11

under window management the only options to check are box switch, cover switch, desktop grid, and flip switch.

right now box switch and desktop grid are checked. there is no desktop cube option.

so now what do i do?

                  thanks,

Does running glxgears in a Konsole window product a graphic now? Does Alt-F2 "nvidia-settings" bring up the Nvidia utility?

when i put glxgears in konsole i still get:

                      tinker@tinker-laptop:~$ glxgears
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual
                      tinker@tinker-laptop:~$

and when i put in "nvidia-settings", it does open nvidia x server settings however an error msg pops up stating:

You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server.

                      so??

                      thanks for the help

                        Ctrl-Alt-F1 to the command line.

                        Code:
                        sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop
                        Code:
                        sudo nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals --composite
If there are errors reported at this point, go back and follow the guidance to install the Nvidia driver.

                        Code:
                        sudo /etc/init.d/kdm start
log in and see how it looks. glxgears has to run, and Alt-F2 has to bring up a working Nvidia utility, before there's any hope for desktop effects.

                          when i entered
                          Code:
                           sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop
my screen went black with a white flashing line
so i turned my comp off and then back on and everything loaded up fine
                          i then entered
                          Code:

Also, I need to see what model of Nvidia card you have. Open a Konsole window, enter
                            Code:
                            lspci -v
