HowTo: convert video files with HandBrake (KDE 3.5)

HandBrake is a cross-platform free source application to convert video files from one format to another. It seems initially to have been designed for Mac users, as a DVD-ripper. But it now provides trans-coding power for most video files. I use it to be able to watch AJazeera podcasts on my non-Apple MP3-player.

Only fairly recently did it release a GUI-version for Ubuntu (that is to say a version with a graphical, user-friendly interface). It is here: http://handbrake.fr/downloads.php
    This is a deb-file.
For installing deb-files, read this (very simple): https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/add-app...ml#install-deb

However, the Linux version in question required use of the KDE 4 kernel.

For those of us who are hanging out with the eminently stable and reliable long-term support Hardy Heron KDE 3.5, using Handbrake seemed to be a closed door. No more! Today I stumbled across a link that took me to another link that took me to another link.... The door opened.

You can now add Handbrake to your repositories by following the instructions here:
    https://edge.launchpad.net/~handbrak...u/+archive/ppa
There is a link here "Technical details about this PPA"
    1) Choose your version of (K)Ubuntu from the drop down list.
    2) Copy the two lines, one by one, to your list of "Third party software" (Adept package manager-> Adept (menu)-> Manage repositories-> Third party software-> Add)
    3) Write down the digits following the slash (/) under "Signing key:"
    4) Finally, go to your KOnsole (TErminal program) and enter:
    sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys the_digits

    That's it.

Incidentally, for those who want to convert Aljazeera podcasts to AVI: make sure to lower audio bitrate to 128.

    Enjoy!
