    [SOLVED] location of exe equivalents

i feel like i'm at it again...

to start off, i'm looking for the Kubuntu equivalent of an ".exe" file.
there are some things that instead of saving the file then running the program to see/use it, i'd like to be able to "Open with..." and be able to find the programs to use the file.

    example:
when downloading a pdf file (using firefox), it asks "Open with" followed by a "Browse..." button and a "Save File" option. while some file types automatically display next to the "Open with", i'd like to be able to choose another program to run the file with.

am i making any sense or just rambling LOL

There are many places, but start looking in /usr/bin

The questions are reasonable, from a user education perspective, but the apparent intention to start doing "Windows-like" maneuvers strikes me as the direct path to dissatisfaction. For example, I've never attempted to "point" the "Open with" dialog to an executable, like one would in Windows, but I've got a feeling it isn't going to work very well. What executable did you think you were going to point it to?

PDF files are readable with Okular. You'll have to install it in the usual manner -- it is in the repos.

skunk... thank you. that's exactly what i was looking for.

dibl... i grew up with Windows so it's what i know, so asking what the Linux equivalent of something is... it means i'm not clueless as to what i want, i'm just asking how do i take what i know and add to it. stop answering my questions if you have nothing useful to add.

You can get clues from two Terminal commands, which and whereis
          e.g.
          alan@alan-desktop:~$ which firefox
          /usr/bin/firefox
          alan@alan-desktop:~$ whereis firefox
          firefox: /usr/bin/firefox /usr/bin/firefox.ubuntu /usr/lib/firefox /usr/share/firefox

I'm sorry Reurbo -- I did not mean to come off as unhelpful. I was hoping maybe to save you some frustration, which is what often happens when taking a "Windows approach" to a Linux issue. Please accept my apology.

You can read this five days old thread, maybe you learn something there

sorry for the long delay in my response dibl.
thank you for the apology. i do understand how using Windows terms would have lead you to believe i was wanting looking for a headache and in that sense, i thank you for the tip. i do see where the confusion could have happened.
you and i both know Windows has exe files to run its programs and before Firefox downloads/saves a file it asks if you want to open the file (say a picture.. which it'd automatically suggest opening in something like Windows Picture Viewer) or save it to view later. my question was to find were the files that run the programs are installed onto my computer so i could start a torrent file opening directly into ktorrent rather than saving it and going to start the download.

                  thanks to everyone again.
                  have a great weekend!
