    Problem opening files over LAN?

Sorry, not sure if this should be here or under the network forums. For some reason when I try to open documents like *.odt or *.doc from a folder on my LAN it wont open. If I copy the file to the local drive it works fine. I do this all the time on my Debian system with no problems. Any suggestions? Thanks...

How are you connected to the LAN, David?

    SAMBA? NFS? VPN?

hardwire connection with internal network interface card. I haven't really done anything to my network connection except set my IP to static.

Re: Problem opening files over LAN?

The intent of my question was to determine what kind of network you were attached to and how.

When you can't open a file on a *nix system it is usually because you don't have read permission on that file. If the file is on a LAN there may be other reasons. That's why I asked you about the LAN and how you are connected to it. It is obvious that an internal eth card/chip is used to connect to a Local Area Network. What is not obvious is HOW that connection is made. If the LAN is composed of Windows servers then the usual connection on a Linux box hooked to the LAN on Window powered servers is via a SAMBA client. How that client is configured determines if you can open, read or write a file on the LAN. If the LAN is NETWARE powered then you are using a NETWARE Linux client. If the LAN server is running Linux then perhaps you are connected via NFS.

See the point of my question.

        Open a Konsole and issue
        ls -l /path/to/server/directory/nameoffile

and paste the results into your next message, along with your LAN information.

open office has issues opening files on a LAN folder. If you mount the share via a mount command, it will work, but it you use samba, it doesn't. been like this for as long as I can remember...

I see what your getting at now, sorry. My network is a windows environment with this box and a couple other Linux boxes on the network. The reason for my question is that I am connected the same way on this (Kubuntu) box as I have my Debian boxes and I can open and access files over the LAN just fine in Debian. I just figured that there was something specific to Kubuntu that might be causing the issue. Thanks...

So, are you not able to open ANY file, or just OO files? I can open anything but OO files.

I can access all files and directories, only thing I cant do is open a document like a word or OO document unless I copy the file locally and then open it. When I attempt to open it over the LAN I get the OO splash screen but then it goes away and nothing else happens.

OK, yeah, that makes sense then, if you need it to work, look into mounting a share to a local folder.

I used to use this to auto mount them a long time ago...I'm guessing that the principles still apply...check it out:

I don't have this listed in System Setting so I'm assuming that I need to add something? What do I need to add? Under the "general" tab there is a "sharing" under the "Network & Connectivity" section. When I click on it it tells me; "SMB and NFS servers are not installed on this machine, to enable this module the servers must be installed" So what exactly do I need to install and configure? Thanks.

Do you have the package called "system-config-samba" installed?

I don't think so, is there an easy way to find out it it's installed?
